Decibel Festival Showcase Spotlight: WEST COAST LOVE – dB in the Park (Saturday)

Posted in Events, Festivals with tags , , , , , , , , , , on August 21, 2010 by worldromper

The West Coast of America has never had a problem with low self-esteem. Referred to as the “Best Coast” by chilled out lefties from sunny San Diego to the emerald city of Seattle, this slice of the country was settled by pioneers and immigrants in search of the boundless opportunities and freedom of lifestyle that this edge of the world provides. Today many dreamers, doers and nature-lovers still flock towards the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean to live in an area that enjoys a laid-back yet dialed-in vibe, progressive cultural attitudes, plenty of wide open spaces and green, green grass. A Midwinter’s Chill: Apparat, Bluetech, Deru, Marty Party, Heyoka & Nanda (REVIEW)

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 7, 2010 by worldromper

The Sea of Dreams party ignited my idea to go to San Francisco for the New Year’s Eve weekend, but what sealed the deal was the show put on by an-ten-nae the following night, A Midwinter’s Chill.

I was drawn in by the eclectic lineup packed with heavy talent, a well-designed evening of artists bringing a myriad of styles and genres to the stage. It was set to be the perfect exhale for the wild night before, and when I walked into the venue Friday night I did just that. Although I love the all-out massives, I really love smaller and more intimate festivities where it is easier to talk to people, from the bartender to the DJ to the promoter to new friends in the crowd.

Sliding in around 11PM I missed almost all of Nanda‘s set; judging from the songs on his Myspace page, this was a mistake. Luckily up next was Deru, whose sets seem to get better each time I hear him, always casting out juicy tracks so lush they are almost lurid.

The details of the venue itself faded into the background against a swirl of revelers, heady from holiday celebrations, myself included. A couple of new friends had decided to hit the party with Android Bishop and I after hearing the music I was playing back at the house- I truly believe that the only reason that people don’t listen to the music I do is because they haven’t heard it yet. Running into a few homies from LA as well, I romped around the party with random friends at three stages of music- a swell deal for the $20 door cover.

Outside Dance Floor

The hot and sweaty side room was pulsing with the sounds of Laura and Shawna who had both played Sea of Dreams the night before, and even better was the outside smoking area presided over by a giant bus pumping out slap-happy dubstep. The heat lamps weren’t even needed as the crowd was bumping and hopping. I don’t know who the DJs were and I meant to climb into the bus where people were dancing and find out, but I kept getting pulled back to the main stage.

I enjoyed Bluetech‘s music more than ever before; sometimes his sets can be bit too downtempo for my hyperactive self, but this one seemed to hit exactly the right pace and smooth over any ridges in the night, working the dance floor into a warm lather.

Apparat's Hands

Next up was Apparat, revving the party up a notch with a firey blend of technoish beats that seemed orchestral they were so encompassing and riveting. And riveted I was; it was one of those nights where I hardly even hit the bar or the bathroom, I was bound to the dance floor, my home.

Marty Party was the much-welcomed surprise guest, further upping the ante with trip-smacking tunes and a stage presence that made me smile as much as his beats made me groove. He is fun to watch, especially from the stage which is where I found myself for much of the night, hiding out behind the speakers for the best view in the house.

AND SHILO

Bringing down the night was another favorite of mine- Heyoka, whose grinding, chunky tunes seem to twist the bass into new animals that run off across the dance floor, contorting every body they encounter into slobbering spasms. I didn’t get to stay for his whole set as my ride was seriously about to drive off without me- but I walked out into the morning absolutely blissful from two incredible nights of dancing and music. Setting the tone for the days to come, there is no better place to start a new year and a new decade than the dance floor.

Much love and mad props to an-ten-nae; I have enjoyed his music for quite a while but have only recently experienced his prowess as an event producer. Also quite the character, this guy is at the top of my book! I would love to hear a little more of Muti Music‘s crunchy style down in SoCal, and with Mimosa now living in LA it is only a matter of time before it happens.

There is a collision of cataclysmic proportions going on right now between hip hop and electronic music; two continents of style crashing together to create an epic mountain range. Each peak is a different new sound, and we are living smack in the middle of the mountains. Hope you’ve got your climbing gear on.

First the West Coast, and then the world.

And one last time, happy 2010. Let’s do this shit.

Apparat, Bluetech & Deru: Jan 1 in San Francisco

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , on December 17, 2009 by worldromper

Some people can’t fathom the idea of partying two nights in a row.

I have never met them, but I heard they exist.

For my friends who know that life is short and we will all be old and wrinkly (if we’re lucky) before we know it, the party rolls right into 2010 with a second helping of electronic deliciousness:

an-ten-nae presents:

Apparat (Live), Bluetech and Deru, the most beautiful January 1 booking I have ever seen. Expect an inspirational ice cream cone of melancholy glitch, ambient dub slapped by a hip hop hand, a swan dive into an experimental ocean of melody, a chilled-out trip down tomorrow lane, and a room full of silly-smiled lovers who know that the best is yet to come.

After an evening of BANGERS at Sea of Dreams the night before, treat yourself to A Midwinter’s Chill and return to orbit with these three artists plus more TBA, special guests and an outdoor tented and heated area. Oh I am excited to sail into 2010 on a ship of elegant beats! Meet me at the helm! Er…119 Utah Street!

The Do Lab presents: Bluetech, Mimosa & Electric Dandelion @ King King

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , , , on November 6, 2009 by worldromper

You probably have noticed that The Do Lab has been taking over King King in Hollywood about once a month these days, spreading the Burner vibe along with freaky art and fatty beats, and for that, LA is grateful. November’s show features fan fav Bluetech, Space Island’s Electric Dandelion, and MY favorite and recent transplant to La La Land (and we welcome you with open arms): MIMOSA.

Click here to read my review of Mimosa‘s latest album Flux for Life on Glitch.FM.

Click here for the Facebook event page and click here for tickets- buy them early because the last Do Lab show sold out and people were crying at the door. Or something like that.

Beats Antique and Deru @ The Do Lab (REVIEW)

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , , , , on October 27, 2009 by worldromper

The King King in Hollywood is usually overrun with fast-tempo freaks who are out for a shiny razzle-dazzle night on the town, but one night a month The Do Lab takes over the stylish venue and packs the dance floor with Burners and other neo-tribal types who actually care what the artists are playing. As always, you can count on a Do Lab show to bring a deeper element to the party and to inspire heads with ideas just as mouths are filled with shouts of glee.

Such was the case last Thursday night as Jupit3r, Deru, and Beats Antique anti-infected Hollyweird with the ruffling sound of sashaying petticoats, the warm smiles of old friends and a hundred guys in brimmed hats.

I arrived at 9PM sharp to the sold-out show; though I was set, I was hoping to score tickets for my out-of-town house guests who had failed to purchase presales. Luckily we were there just in time for them to cage two of the ten tickets for sale at 9PM. Early birds and the worm and all.

Despite a decently long line to get inside the venue, the King King was empty except for two freaks on the dance floor (and one blogger); the opening DJ Pod was playing an interesting set but I was jonesing for Deru to finish his drink at the bar and play already. In the meantime my friends got in, and we left to party where the drinks were cheaper: our flasks.

The crowd filtered in and the dance floor began to fill up as Deru progressed into his set, riding in on a horse of bass and bringing his delightful version of glitch-out hip hop/IDM to a room full of welcoming ears. I would pay to hear Deru play any day of the week. Maybe every day.

By the time Beats Antique came on, the urban gypsies were out in full force and the dance floor was packed, strutting, and beautiful. Beats Antique’s dark circus music has struck a chord in the electronic music community with it’s three rings of broken beat brass, middle eastern enigmas, and straight up underground West Coast lean. They provide an uplifting and fun performance experience that is not too hard, not too soft. Oh how we love the live instruments fused with forward-thinking electronica! Using a violin, guitar, drum kit, plenty of magic electronic boxes and a feather-wielding dancer, Beats Antique does not rest on it’s obviously stellar reputation with the festie crowd, but delivers a fresh and invigorating round of dance love with every song. Fusing live instrumentation with heavy, bouncing beats, their performance was an intriguing display of infinite possibilities of music from roots to future funk, and of the people who believe in such dreams and nonsense.

And I’m not the only one.

Catch Beats Antique as they tour the West Coast in the upcoming weeks; find more information and tour dates here.

Symbiosis Gathering: Not Your Average Festival

Posted in Events, Festivals with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2009 by worldromper

Symbiosis Gathering is not your average festival; these days even one-night outdoor events are calling themselves ‘festivals’ when everybody knows it is nothing more than a corporate event where most of the attendees are there to party, and not much more.

Symbiosis is different. With a focus on environmental consciousness and ecological sustainability, this celebration has a deep respect for our natural world as well as the community it sustains. Besides green living, Symbiosis is very much about transformational learning experiences and the aesthetics of co-creation, from visual arts to performance, rituals and dance.

And then there is the music. Not only does Symbiosis Gathering provide a meaningful backdrop to showcase our beloved West Coast artists and their evolving future sound, but we also create a welcoming environment for musicians, bands, DJs and producers from all over the world. From dubstep legends and jam band rockers to abstract beat scientists and street bass pioneers, there will be many old favorites to dance to as well as plenty of new discoveries to make.

Just to name drop a few: Les Claypool, Coco Rosie, Amon Tobin, Bassnectar, Freeland Live Band, Caspa, Flying Lotus, Glitch Mob, N-Type, Pretty Lights, Beats Antique, Bluetech, an-ten-nae, Heyoka, Lipp Service, Mimosa, Of Porcelain, Vibesquad, Welder, Babylon System and over a hundred more. Check out the entire lineup here.

Visual arts are also a major focus of Symbiosis, and you will find large-scale art installations, body art, a graffiti mural, a full-size art gallery space and live painting and workshops from many talented creators including Alex and Alyson Grey. Performing artists will also roam the venue and inject the community with the wild, the weird, and the wonder-inspiring. Come and join in the fun!

Transformational learning and integrated education is also central to the Symbiosis philosophy, and there will be workshops, playshops, discussions and presentations on a wide variety of subjects from esoteric philosophy and embodied movement to sacred geometry and composting alchemy. Our “Wellness Oasis” has a variety of resources to rejuvenate your body, nurture your spirit, and expand your mind with reiki, acupuncture, tai chi, Capoeira, juggling and much more.

And more! We have organic food vendors, sustainable arts and craft merchants in the tribal market, a kids’ area, guided nature walks, eco-arting, a lake for splash wars and water wings, and dishwashing stations to help you make this a no trash, carry-in, carry-out event.

Join us at historic Camp Mather on the edge of California’s treasured Yosemite National Park; the beautiful outdoor location is a gracious player and its natural splendor will inspire all who encounter it. It is with great respect that we will dance upon this land.

Please click here for more information and to buy tickets.

Symbiosis Gathering Changed My Life

Posted in Events, Festivals, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 6, 2009 by worldromper

This is a story of DF5K.

2007 Fall Seattle DMB Symbiosis Halloween 037It was nearly two years ago now that I moved back to the States from New Zealand. Summer in Seattle was swelling to the crusty-hot days of August and I had a shit job doing shit bartending work at a shit hotel downtown, working long into the night scrubbing bar mats and serving drunk tourists. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing with myself whatsoever. None.

I had never listened to electronic music before in my life.

new zealand is freaking epicWell okay that is not entirely true; I had stumbled upon the dub and reggae scene in New Zealand, and high on rotation in my iPod were Katchafire, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Pitch Black and Salmonella Dub as well as anyone who had remixed them. Guys in the Auckland record stores were always happy to school an interested American girl on their island music.

I had also spent many happy nights out on the town with my flatmate Ian, dancing for hours in Auckland’s happenin’ Viaduct area, and had walked home more than once from these “Heels Only” clubs with bleeding feet. Before in my life I had glided past a thousand dance clubs drooling out lame house music onto the streets, but for some reason, I started going in towards the beats and shaking what my momma gave me for the first time ever.

116I left Auckland, and months of traveling around New Zealand led me to discover pockets of counterculture dotted all over the two islands. Tiny camp towns like Marahau, barely even a freckle on the map, are nestled next to insane national parks and were populated by a swirling mix of artsy locals, hikers who were about to tramp the mountains or who had just returned from a month in the bush, world travelers, hippies, neohippies, surfers from Santa Cruz, stoners, seekers, searchers, and freaks like me.

These havens were full of people whose life was centered around sharing art and creating a sustainable and beautiful life, such a stark contrast to most Americans I knew whose only goals seemed to revolve around bigger cars, bigger houses, and more more more.

But soon enough I was back in the US of A and fairly floating through space and time with no plans and no idea whatsoever. I wondered where the beautiful spirits congregated on this continent, and if I would find them.

2007 Fall Seattle DMB Symbiosis Halloween 033And then a friend invited me to this music and art festival in the woods of Northern California called Symbiosis. It would be a very long day’s drive from Seattle with him and his girlfriend and we would stay for three nights at  place called Angel’s Camp. The festival was focused on sustainability and would be a pack-in, pack-out affair. Did I want to go?

Hell yes I did. I had the slight problem of a jobby-job, but I have never been one to let a bullshit job get in the way of my life. So, I faked pneumonia. I went to the hospital (to be fair I did have a cough) and when the doctor said he could write me a note to get off work for two days, I said, “well, how about until next Tuesday?” The doctor agreed and I was off work for a very long weekend, bound for my first true outdoor party experience.

I think you guys know how this story goes.

2007 Fall Seattle DMB Symbiosis Halloween 046Arriving early to the isolated location, my friends and I set up our tents in between the two stages, and what happened for the next four days in that remote wooded spot changed my life forever, as I now write to you deep in the thick of what will be my life’s work, writing for and promoting the music that I love and the artists who make it. It was not just the music I experienced that shook my spirit and lit my soul on fire, but the thick saturation of artistic expression and the community around it. It was a haven for freaks like me; I had finally found a home in this life, and it was beautiful.

When I look back at the lineup for Symbiosis 2007, it blows my mind: Shpongle, Flying Lotus, Ott, Bluetech, Glitch Mob, BLVD, Souleye, Ana Sia, Zilla, Lazer Sword, Audiovoid, Danny Corn, Hallucinogen in Dub, Chris de Luca, Mala, Bassnectar and dozens and dozens more. These artists were my first toe-dip into the world of EDM, and I think you can see why I turned out the way I did.

2007 Fall Seattle DMB Symbiosis Halloween 045I can’t remember if it was the first or second day, but around about five in the morning one night these four guys were up on the second stage, just tearing up the dance floor. They were slamming sound down with such force I thought my neck might break; I had never before experienced any type of music, electronic or otherwise, that was so fresh and unique and unlike anything else out there. I was not hearing this music, I was living it: I was breathless and losing clothes by the minute and probably had a long string of drool dripping off my lower lip.

I turned to a new friend next to me on the dance floor and asked, “What do you call this music? With the really heavy, fucked-up bass?”

You call it GLITCH,” was the reply. And a fiend was born.

2007 Fall Seattle DMB Symbiosis Halloween 035

Since that night I have seen the Glitch Mob dozens of times and have devoted my life to sharing not just glitch hop and its bass-slutty cousins, but the whole music and art and community experience that has meant so much to me in this life, which I think I can say, a DJ saved.

I returned to Seattle with an insatiable hunger for the beats and began going out six nights a week to electronic music shows, meeting new friends with open arms at every turn. While I might possibly have found another road to the electronic arts that I now so adore, I did not. Symbiosis opened my eyes and set me on my current life path of promoting and writing for musicians and artists. I am eternally grateful for the past, and forever stoked for the future.

2007 Fall Seattle DMB Symbiosis Halloween 036Now, after a year’s respite, Symbiosis Gathering is back for 2009, this time at Camp Mather on the doorstep to Yosemite from September 17-21 and with a lineup that will slap you across the face, pour fireworks into your soul and call you a cheesemaker. Check the whole lineup here; I am most looking forward to hearing Caspa, Amon Tobin, Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, the Glitch Mob, Shpongle, Flying Lotus, Hallucinogen, Mala, N-Type, an-ten-nae, Mimosa, Of Porcelain, Vibesquad, Heyoka, Kether, Lazer Sword, Lipp Service, Souleye, Welder, Random Rab, Babylon System, Jupit3r, Mozaic, Mr. Rogers, R/D, Treavor Moontribe, Sleepyhead, Sexytime, Nikola Baytala, Noah Pred and about eight zillion more.

2007 Fall Seattle DMB Symbiosis Halloween 042I will no doubt discover several new favorites, and I am more excited about this outdoor festival than any other this year. Not to be rash, but I have heard several people talk about how much more fun Symbiosis is than Burning Man. Whoa. That is almost party blasphemy, right?

Whether you are just hearing about Symbiosis Gathering or have been waiting with baited breath for this year’s installment, one thing is certain: the music will blow your mind, stamped and approved by DF5K.

And it just might change your life.

The 2007 Symbiosis Gathering changed my life and set me on the path I now follow. At 4AM the first night of the party I asked one of my new dance floor friends: “What do you call this music, with the really heavy, fucked up bass?”

And a fiend was born.

STS9 “Peaceblaster” Remix Album to Benefit New Orleans Make It Right Foundation

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 31, 2009 by worldromper

I cannot wait to spend my money on this music.

theneworleansmakeitrightSTS9 and 1320 Records drop remix album Peaceblaster on June 23rd and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Make It Right Foundation of New Orleans, an organization dedicated to rebuilding the city and helping reestablish the lives of so many people whose worlds were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

I am from the dirty South; I grew up drinking purple and have spent many beautiful days and more than a few crazy nights in the rich, colorful, delicious city of New Orleans. It is a place thick with layers of a storied past and a city like no other place on earth.

Make It Right is Brad Pitt’s lovechild (one of ’em) and the foundation is working with the residents of the ravaged 9th Ward to rebuild the neighborhood in a sustainable fashion while retaining all of the character and soul that makes New Orleans so special.

Besides helping people who really need it, JUST CHECK OUT this ridiculous list of just some of the 30 artists who remix STS9 songs on Peaceblaster:

  • Lazer Sword
  • Glitch Mob
  • Eskmo
  • Bluetech
  • Alex B
  • Ott
  • Nosaj Thing
  • Welder
  • Deru
  • Pretty Lights
  • Eliot Lipp

Bluetech, Welder & Shen @ Zanzibar

Last night I hauled my ass over to Santa Monica to catch some trippy ass music at Club Zanzibar out of Bluetech, Welder and Shen as part of the record release tour for Divine Invasion, Bluetech’s new album.

The crowd ranged from a guy in a red jumpsuit (“I have it in four colors!”) to girls with feathers in their hair to chicks with armfuls of sparkling Swarovski crystals to the dude dropping beats in a welding helmet.

What impressed me the most about the night was the fluidity of sound between the three artists, a cohesive theme of trip which threaded the night together like a psychedelic path to the moon. This is stoner music; to get the full, gooey effect of the melodic bass you should be dipping your toes in a different state of consciousness, and in the desert, preferably.

Welder was my favorite but he has been for a while; his music made my body create new dance moves, to express itself in new ways and surprise my brain, which makes this nerd feel happy and more connected to the earth and to my carnal being. Good stuff.

I kept wishing we were all outside, and I am sure most of the hippie-flavored crowd would have come with me. Zanzibar’s sound is not the best; I am getting spoiled to epic sound systems and find that more and more these days I choose not to dance at the front of the dance floor, but at the spot where the sound is richest. If Club Zanzibar would allocate half the budget it spent on floor pillows and incense to a better sound system, it would be a vast improvement for this chi-chi club.

The slower tempos create a more mellow evening, with a more expressive dance floor. This longer space between beats means more room to swirl and twist your body parts between moves, which means greater intimidation factor on the dance floor, which means a higher percentage of better dancers because the bad dancers fall away.

I met a lot of really neat people last night. I find that the better the music is, the better the crowd is. Funny how that works. I kept thinking I saw people from Seattle- is that Skoi in the corner? Marie at the bar? Manahan walking in? This is always a good sign for the evening.

Sorry for the puny review; the night was anything but. I would definitely suggest that anyone check out the Divine Invasion Tour as the three guys head up the West Coast for a night of chilled out, tripped out, soul-soothing music.

Welder, duh.

Welder, duh.

Nalepa: Flatlands *NEW MUSIC*

Posted in Artists, LISTEN TO THIS, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on March 20, 2009 by worldromper

Straight outta LA comes this tasty new album, Flatlands, from Steve Nalepa who always manages to create beats fat with bass but still light on their feet, all drenched in an otherworldly ethos that transports your brainspace straight to another place, a land where music is god and the beat is king. Kind of like my apartment.

This music makes me want to retreat into the daydream world that is Planet Shilo and not come back, to lie in satin sheets all day until sunset rouses me to a night full of mischief, to find a hidden beach and run naked into the crashing waves and revert to my mermaid self. It’s that good.

Flatlands: Remixes features the work of a few friends including Nosaj Thing, the Glitch Mob, Deru, [a]pendics.shuffle, Bluetech and Heyoka, just to namedrop a few.
