If you don’t know Doktor Krank’s blog, check it out. Doktor Krank is one of my favorite fellow bloggers and holds down the bass music scene in Poland by delivering a fresh stream of sounds from the heavy, glitched-out future funk side of the universe.

Start with this post: Doktor Krank’s Top 20 Mixes of 2009, which includes choice selections from Heyoka, Nosaj Thing, Pantyraid, Mary Anne Hobbs, Pressha and Kat1lyst, Alex B, Samples, Sleepytime, Eprom, Lazer Sword…I think you get the drift!

Due to popular demand I am writing up my showcase suggestions for the 2009 Decibel Festival which begins TOMORROW!

I have been pimping for this festival for a while; I believe strongly in the smart curation of the party. These lineups are not just thrown together, but rather placed with precision into intelligent mixes of eclectic talent. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I write for Decibel, and am honored to be a part of Seattle’s EDM festival.

I have bolded my top pick for each day, and added links in orange to the showcase descriptions that I wrote up.

Happy Decibel everybody!

Decibel Festival Showcase Spotlight: Starborne Dirty Velvet Afterhours

Posted in Events, Festivals, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 31, 2009 by worldromper

If you like your afterhours dark, deep and dirty – slip on over to the Little Red Studio on Saturday night to wallow in beats so filthy they will stick to your skin for days, no matter how hard you scrub. Soap and water are no match for two rooms of talent, guaranteed to completely contaminate your Decibel Festival experience with a bass crunk-dunk of some of the freshest and finest sounds from the electronic arts underground.

Ana Sia

Ana Sia

The Main Room welcomes 3WS, the combination of San Francisco’s Ana Sia and Danny Corn, whose rough rumblings satisfy the body and the brain to simultaneously activate your limbs and uplift your mind. Mike Slott’s hip hop-influenced imagination and innovative future-funk wraps you in a dirty blanket of experimental movement, while Eprom kicks you in the face with fatty rawness – his slamming and crunchy twist on West Coast Sound is always a party favorite. Mimosa slides in next with sexy basslines and a thick psychedelic density, rolling deep like purple with a gang of dub-infused grooves.

Take

Take

The sounds will be smokin’ heavy in the lounge next door, where LA’s Take keeps the beats on a West Coast lean with his laid-back, acousmatic blend of hypnotic hip hop, otherworldly melodies, and space dust. Kotchy creates top-shelf pop reworkings with toes dipped in electro and hip hop; using live instruments he delivers sets as unpredictable as they are unique. Professor Steve Nalepa teaches us the true depth of dub and the grime of glitch from the beat blackboard, and J Roby of Portland’s Abstract Earth Project experiments with sounds that sooth you right onto the dance floor.

Come out and cloak yourself in delicious Dirty Velvet and realize how much fun getting filthy can be.

Starborne Dirty Velvet Afterhours takes place Saturday, September 26 at Little Red Studio. Click here to buy tickets and for more information about the 2009 Decibel Festival.

    DOPE SAUCE: Mochipet’s XLR8R Mix

    Posted in Artists, LISTEN TO THIS with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 24, 2009 by worldromper

1187777298_l1I cannot get enough of this mix. I have listened to it twice this morning and had to burn a CD for my car and my home.

With bits from Jamie Lidell, Eprom, Lupe Fiasco, Daeldelus, Three Six Mafia featuring UGK (THIRD COAST REPRESENTIN’) AND MJ, it is the dope sauce you were hoping would come your way this fine February afternoon. Eating it makes you ill, not sick, and is highly suggested.

West Coast Future Sound Movement on BBC Radio 1

    Posted in LISTEN TO THIS with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 11, 2009 by worldromper

Download and listen to the whole show for yourself here.

Bear in mind however, that West Coast Rocks on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Experimental show on the BBC Radio 1 is much, much more than a music show. It is a documentation of the fresh and crackling cultural movement of music that is growing on the West Coast of the USA and changing lives in the process.

I know- I just moved to LA to write and promote for the music that I love and the artists who make it.

With 100% West Coast beats the show begins. The bass from Mono/Poly‘s “Red and Yellow Toys” flaps down and gnaws on you, and from there you get a guided tour of the future sound happening in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Particular focus is paid to what I labeled “the epicenter of the future of music:” the community and inspiring energy whirling around Low End Theory in LA. A sense of momentum is indeed building, and you can feel it right inside your chest when you walk into Low End Theory, which I am about to do in a couple of hours.

And when I return home tonight, things will have shifted, musical tomorrows tweaked just a bit more by what will come out of those speakers tonight, by the audience’s reaction, by the dancers’ moves, by each knob twisted and every lever adjusted by the performers. Daddy Kev talks about Low End Theory as a physical experience; the design of the venue itself is like a bass bin and the music flows through you. Here you are not a mere spectator; here you are part of the international electronic community, and here you will partake in the evolution of music, and come out a different person on the other side.

Low End Theory is a rite of passage for performers as well, many of whom you can now hear on the 2-hour show which is ripe with interviews with the Glitch Mob, Kid Kamelion, DJ Tomas, The Gaslamp Killer and Daddy Kev, tons of cameo’d voice shout-outs, and a track list that tickles the fancy of any music freak worth their MP3s.

    Standout tracks for me include:

    • Take‘s remix of “Sleeping Bear” for Architeq, my new Myspace profile song (Dubplate)
    • SamIYam‘s “Bricks” (Dubplate)
    • Vaccine “Radiate” (Dubplate)
    • Eprom “Zoning” (Dubplate)
    • Nosaj Thing “Coat of Arms” (Alpha Pup)

…and of course a lot more you guys, but I have to go now and start the prefunk and head out to Low End Theory, to celebrate the Age of the Nerd in a place where music has been liberated, where dots are connected, where you might just find yourself party to an audio sonic bikini waxing. And just maybe run into a “portal“.
