Decibel Festival Showcase Spotlight: THE ART OF RHYTHM (Beats Antique, Emancipator, Phutureprimitive & Phidelity)

(Beats Antique)
The Art of Rhythm showcase will prove beyond a shadow of a beat that electronica can be a deeply powerful emotional motivator when infused with humanity and warmth. Espousing this deeper approach to digital expression along with conscious thought and live arts performance are the neotribal communities of the West Coast, whose influence on the evolution of electronic music increases with each festival season. The Art of Rhythm showcases four live artists whose heartfelt, organic music represents well this uniquely West Coast culture of creativity. Continue reading

“I’ve never been to anything like this before in my life!!!”

That was just one of the many positive exclamations I heard from partygoers who were blown away by The Do Lab‘s signature event, the art and music festival and celebration of love known as Lucent L’amour.

Lucent L’amour Valentine Music & Art Festival

Posted in Events, Festivals, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 11, 2010 by worldromper

Going down Saturday, February 13 is the Valentine-themed music and art festival known as Lucent L’amour, a mad frenzy of creative expression, theatrical performances and of course, that rich and chewy bass music that we love so well.

Here is the quick rundown:

  • 100+ artists, musicians, performers and art installations
  • Two stages of music and dancing with live and electronic acts
  • Live mural and digital painting, art gallery and silent auction
  • Romantic, colorful and whimsical décor all throughout venue
  • Aerialists, acrobats, burlesque dancers and other live performers
  • Unique arts and crafts vendors, full bars & delicious food
  • Downtown LA location in historic Shrine Auditorium, plenty of parking
  • 7PM-4AM, 18+ event, VIP passes available presale

MUSIC: The festival is presented by The Do LaB, one of the premier Burner tribes in Los Angeles, known for throwing fat parties with eclectic lineups and colossal bass. This year’s Lucent L’amour festival has two stages and a keen selection of beautiful beats on the lineup. Both big names and critically acclaimed artists will provide a rousing night of fresh beats for the crowd: Bassnectar, N.A.S.A, Stanton Warriors, Yard Dogs Road Show, Lucent Dossier Experience, Beats Antique, Lazer Sword, Lynx & Janover and Patricio.

ART: Visual arts go hand in hand with music at Lucent L’amour, and you will find a stimulating feast for your eyes all throughout the festival. In addition to a huge art gallery curated by Mike Russek and Deborah Vogt featuring the work of dozens and dozens of artists, we will have a live mural painting by The Mac and Retna as well as a silent art auction, with proceeds going towards the purchase of music and art supplies for under-funded schools. Capping it off is the avant-garde electroart of Andrew Jones, whose inspired creations resonate with the West Coast electronic music community like beats rolling out of a bass bin.

SELF-EXPRESSION: Lucent L’amour promises to create a collision of music, art and creative self-expression. The festival is not a series of performances or a show, but rather an interactive art event where everyone becomes part of the experience, immersed together in one fantastic night of revelry. Come as you are, or deck yourself out in colorful and romantic attire: petticoats, corsets, zoot suits, ruffled parasols, purple polka dot knickers, feathered top hats, green corduroys, striped stockings, and sequined boots- or all of the above.

ROMANCE & MORE: In addition to the music and visual art offerings, Lucent L’amour will dish out a sexy serving of playful décor from the fun to the freaky, captivating theatrical performances, unusual craft vendors, hot munchies and full bar service for those 21+ (event is 18+). VIP passes and tickets are available here, and check the Lucent L’amour website for more videos, photos, music from our featured artists and weekly ticket giveaways.

Beats Antique and Deru @ The Do Lab (REVIEW)

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , , , , on October 27, 2009 by worldromper

The King King in Hollywood is usually overrun with fast-tempo freaks who are out for a shiny razzle-dazzle night on the town, but one night a month The Do Lab takes over the stylish venue and packs the dance floor with Burners and other neo-tribal types who actually care what the artists are playing. As always, you can count on a Do Lab show to bring a deeper element to the party and to inspire heads with ideas just as mouths are filled with shouts of glee.

Such was the case last Thursday night as Jupit3r, Deru, and Beats Antique anti-infected Hollyweird with the ruffling sound of sashaying petticoats, the warm smiles of old friends and a hundred guys in brimmed hats.

I arrived at 9PM sharp to the sold-out show; though I was set, I was hoping to score tickets for my out-of-town house guests who had failed to purchase presales. Luckily we were there just in time for them to cage two of the ten tickets for sale at 9PM. Early birds and the worm and all.

Despite a decently long line to get inside the venue, the King King was empty except for two freaks on the dance floor (and one blogger); the opening DJ Pod was playing an interesting set but I was jonesing for Deru to finish his drink at the bar and play already. In the meantime my friends got in, and we left to party where the drinks were cheaper: our flasks.

The crowd filtered in and the dance floor began to fill up as Deru progressed into his set, riding in on a horse of bass and bringing his delightful version of glitch-out hip hop/IDM to a room full of welcoming ears. I would pay to hear Deru play any day of the week. Maybe every day.

By the time Beats Antique came on, the urban gypsies were out in full force and the dance floor was packed, strutting, and beautiful. Beats Antique’s dark circus music has struck a chord in the electronic music community with it’s three rings of broken beat brass, middle eastern enigmas, and straight up underground West Coast lean. They provide an uplifting and fun performance experience that is not too hard, not too soft. Oh how we love the live instruments fused with forward-thinking electronica! Using a violin, guitar, drum kit, plenty of magic electronic boxes and a feather-wielding dancer, Beats Antique does not rest on it’s obviously stellar reputation with the festie crowd, but delivers a fresh and invigorating round of dance love with every song. Fusing live instrumentation with heavy, bouncing beats, their performance was an intriguing display of infinite possibilities of music from roots to future funk, and of the people who believe in such dreams and nonsense.

And I’m not the only one.

Catch Beats Antique as they tour the West Coast in the upcoming weeks; find more information and tour dates here.

Check out The Do Lab here; their next event at King King features none other than Bluetech, Mimosa and Electric Dandelion.

The Do LaB presents DERU, Jupit3r & Beats Antique @ King King 10/22

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , on October 20, 2009 by worldromper

Every time I see Deru out and about on the streets of LA, I harass him about when he is playing out next in our fair city of freaks. Well it’s my lucky week because not only did Deru play at Droid Part 1 this past Saturday before the coppers shut the shit down, but he is playing AGAIN at The Do Lab’s show @ King King in Hollywood this Thursday October 22.

Not only that, but Deru is joined by JUPIT3R who tends to kill as well as Beats Antique. Like every show The Do Lab puts on, you can count on plenty of chewy atmosphere, and a colorful crowd.

More about Deru, one of my favorites:

Deru is Benjamin Wynn, an electronic music producer from Los Angeles whose fusion of IDM, hip-hop and emotronica pushes open boundaries inside the listener’s mind to create a greater space for his richly textured sound to evolve and room for the future of electronic music to arrive.

Now busy composing music for television, film, dance and performance art, Deru began producing in high school and later obtained a degree in music technology from CalArts. As co-owner of the music and sound company “The Track Team” he recently received an MPSE Golden Reel award nomination for best sound design in 2009 for work on Avatar: The Last Airbender. Further highlighting Deru’s versatility and creative range is his collaboration with classical composer Joby Talbot on a dance score for the Paris Opera Ballet, which like much of this talented producer’s work embodies a seamless and soulful synergy and displays a wide array of musical influences.

Deru’s music is the story of an ancient worship service under star-filled skies which you wake from only to realize you have left the planet; his chilling sounds are akin to robots confessing feelings of love, of an artificial factory gurgling and spurting beneath a grey ocean of space, of a haunted heart that can only sketch an idea of emotion, slick with the goo of a disturbed magnetism.
