Featuring Jonathan Davis of Korn, Oakenfold, DJ Von Douche and me.

Ah just kidding, maybe half my face is on the screen for a split second- I doubt my mom could even pick me out. BUT it is a decent video. Read my account of the video shoot at the Roxy here; and read my interview with Infected Mushroom here.Vodpod videos no longer available.

Interview with Infected Mushroom

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 24, 2009 by worldromper

Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Infected Mushroom at the video shoot at the Roxy for their new video, “Smashing the Opponent” featuring the vocals of Jonathan Davis of Korn. All five guys were in the room but Duvdev (Amit Duvudevani) did almost all of the talking; they were all really nice and amiable and were doing one interview after another with nary a hint of exhaustion.

Infected Mushroom’s new album, Legend of the Black Shawarma, drops September 9 on Oakenfold’s label Perfecto, and the boys will be at the Electric Daisy Carnival this weekend along with me and 100,000 other dancing freaks.

Here you go:

DF5K: You guys are LA-based, and there are a thousand locations in this city- why film your video at the Roxy?

IM: Well first of all, all the videos of Infected Mushroom (which is one, by the way) were shot in Canada, we never shot a video in the United States. We live in LA, the Roxy’s pretty close to our house, a landmark, and many people have been here, many bands have played, and it is just a cool place to shoot a video.

DF5K: A lot of people are talking about the West Coast and specifically LA as the new epicenter of electronic music in the United States, that things are shifting from the East Coast to the West. Do you guys think this is true and if so, where do you see your band in the West Coast Future Sound Movement?

IM: I think that Infected Mushroom is kind of a different breed in the electronic music, we have so much emphasis on heavy metal and rock, so we are not considered any more so electronic. But we are an electronic band, we mix trance with heavy metal. I don’t know how we fit in the East Coast/West Coast thing. We like LA, we live over here, we like the weather. Fuck the East Coast and uh, fuck Baltimore by the way, and especially fuck Baltimore, and yeah- we kind of like it over here.

DF5K: Me too, me too! So the new album coming out, Legend of the Black Shawarma: how is it different? How is it fresh? What is new for you guys?

IM: First of all, you know the guests on the album, Jonathan Davis of course the lead singer of Korn is in the video clip we are shooting today; Perry Farrell from Jane’s Addiction, Paul Oakenfold working with us on the album. Me and Erez we took a bit different approach on this album, bringing people that are not familiar with our kind of style; actually they were but nevermind. So you know they come from different genres and we put them on the album. We wanted to do it actually with Vicious Delicious two years ago and didn’t have the chance; now we have the time, they have the time and we are happy that it came out.

DF5K: How is it working with Paul Oakenfold, the greatest legend ever and shit?

IM: It is really great, you know Paul helped us a lot in many directions even in electronic music we didn’t know. Me and Erez have been doing this for so many years but Paul took it to a much higher level, especially here in the States. He met us with so many people and so many things, and so it actually, it was great.

DF5K: You guys are in the middle of a tour. Where do you go next?

IM: We’re doing Russia, Moscow this weekend then we are coming back again to the United States doing Salt Lake City and EDC here in LA downtown, a great party and yeah actually July, a little bit of the States and then going to Europe again.

DF5K: How do you see the crowds and community, how is it different in Europe as opposed to here?

IM: I think that the rave scene here now in the States got a new fresh crowd, a different crowd than used to be before. In Europe, they’ve been seeing raves for twenty years, you know. For me and Erez, we feel much more excited playing here in the U.S. because the crowds are much more into it.

“Especially Baltimore!” interjects one of the other band members.

(Duvdev continues) Fuck Baltimore! Actually Baltimore is wonderful, the best spot…

“Suddenly Baltimore is on the page again!”

(Duvdev continues) By the way, fuck Baltimore.

DF5K: Especially!

IM: But anyway yeah the crowds in the United States are really appreciative, they go mental at the shows and me and Erez, we kind of like it for the moment over here.

DF5K: I saw you guys in Seattle last year and I noticed the crowd was younger and lots of females too, a big female draw…

IM: Good times, good times!

DF5K: You don’t often see that for techno shows and other genres of EDM.

IM: Good times, by the way! Especially in Baltimore! No- there are no girls in Baltimore.

DF5K: If you bring the girls, the boys will follow. Right on. So where are you most excited about going for your next show?

IM: Moscow is really exciting, always good shows over there; back to the States EDC is one of the biggest, here in downtown, we look forward to that.

DF5K: Are you guys playing on Friday or Saturday?

IM: Saturday, and we are looking forward to that because we did two EDCs already, a huge show, great reaction. Looking forward to Salt Lake City, one day before ON the Salt Lake, last time was a great show- mucho mucho mucho girls. We like Salt Lake City. Utah! And fuck Baltimore.

DF5K: So who is inspiring you guys, what music do you listen to all the time, right now: who are you really digging?

IM: You know me and Erez we listen to everything, from electronic, heavy metal, radio, hip hop, whatever comes along. We like Depeche Mode, everything. This album is influenced by so many bands.

DF5K: Are there any particular LA artists you like?

IM: Actually, I don’t know. I like Incubus lately. I didn’t before but I do now.

DF5K: What do you guys think about dubstep? It’s blowing up here in LA and all over.

IM: I have heard of them but I didn’t hear their music.

DF5K: It’s a new genre, real bass heavy and whompy and underground.

IM: I have heard the name but not the music yet so I don’t know.

DF5K: Awesome. So are you gonna be here all day shooting the video? How long does it take?

IM: We are here for the morning and we have some night scenes to shoot, basically you are coming to a club and it has to be night.

DF5K: Yeah I was confused walking up here in daylight hours, like ‘Where is the Roxy?’ It’s daylight and I didn’t recognize anything!

IM: Yeah so we are doing the shoot now and it is gonna go all through the night.

DF5K: Are you pretty involved in the design of the video?

IM: Well we came up with the script and then we leave it to the guys who know what they’re doing; we do the music and hopefully it will come as we envision it.

DF5K: Do you go out a lot in LA to hear music?

IM: Actually no because we do three to four shows a week, then we come and we have our families, babies, and to produce and stuff, so actually I don’t go out so much. We are in clubs anyway. Yesterday the Lakers won…

DF5K: Did you riot? Throw a trash can on a cop car?

IM: I went rioting, I had a beer.

DF5K: Run down the interstate?

IM: I went crazy, yeah.

DF5K: Do you think you’ll stay in LA for a while?

IM: I know we’re feeling pretty cool now over here, we have homes over here, good times, quiet times, and for now we are here.

DF5K: What about Baltimore?

IM: Fuck Baltimore!

Infected Mushroom Video Shoot: Smashing the Opponent

Posted in Music News, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , on June 17, 2009 by worldromper

I headed up to the Roxy in West Hollywood on Monday to interview Israeli psytrancers Infected Mushroom and wound up being in their next video and had a nice chit-chaterooni with Paul Oakendfuckingfold as well. He was a really nice guy, despite tales I had heard to the contrary. Of course, I am blond and don’t really let people not be my friend.

I will write up the interview shortly but for now I just wanted to tell you about the video shoot for their new single, “Smashing the Opponent,” featuring the vocals of Korn’s Jonathan Davis. The track is off Infected Mushroom’s upcoming album, Legend of the Black Shawarma, which is due out September 8th on Oakenfold’s label Perfecto.

I am not the biggest psytrance fan in the history of the universe, but I was feeling the track and dancing in my heels as it boomed from the Roxy’s sound system, the ribbons of bassline flowing smooth like champagne under Davis’ raw and burning vocals. Most of the people there for the shoot had no idea who anyone was at all. One chick asked me, “Are these guys famous? I hope so.” Ahhhhlalalala, LA.

The champagne was actually flowing like rocket fountains all over me and about twenty other “dance club” chicks; after my interview I was hanging around watching the video shoot and then just jumped in with the other ladies who had been instructed to go “crazy on the dance floor” for one of the scenes. Crazy on the dance floor? I can do that. I am constantly surprised with what you can get away with if you just do it, if you just ask the question, if you just walk through that door. You should definitely try it sometime.

The “Smashing the Opponent” video basically makes fun of the club scene and DJs and stupid chicks; the star of the shoot is this mophead DJ with a fat grill and pimpy white suit over a shiny shirt. He is constantly surrounded by girls going nutty, he drinks espresso at the DJ booth and never even touches his records- he has two hot-chick assistants who put them on and spin them for him while he dances and poses. They help him take off his coat, and then his pants- revealing emerald-green paisley bikini briefs. Funny shit; I mean if we can’t make fun of ourselves, then who will?

After having “champagne” (really apple cider) sprayed all over me from eight directions while I thrashed about like a wild woman in the middle of a group of girls I split the scene; the filming was to last another six hours and I didn’t really care to be in big part of the video, I just like having the experience! And bragging about it, of course.

So stay tuned on MTV (Do they even show videos anymore? Does anyone out there still watch MTV?) for the video and you know I will be posting it here as well. And I will be getting around to writing up that interview shortly, although I will say this: Infected Mushroom LOVES the West Coast!

But then again, who doesn’t?

Here’s some fuzzy shots for you of the video shoot featuring our superstar DJ and his hottie bodyguards:

Thank you, Decibel and Starborne.

Rusko Drowns LA in Ocean of Bass

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 12, 2009 by worldromper

All photos by Staticka, who rocks.

You guys are getting another Rusko review. Another dubstep review. From another ridiculous night of bass music on your West Coast.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

This morning I feel like I was struck by lightening. I feel like the cells of my body have been injected with electricity and are all dancing inside of me with their arms in the air screaming “yeah!” My heart was still racing last night when I arrived home, over an hour after I had walked off the dance floor. I was 100% straight-edge sober. But I was high as fuck.

http://www.jefftovar.com/statickaWalking up to the ticket table outside of Lot 613 in downtown LA last night, people were already yelling, “What did you say?!?” from thirty feet outside the venue’s closed doors, the booming waves of bass flowing out into the night like a typhoon. Just while I was waiting to go in, no less than ten people came out to get the free earplugs (mad props to the promoters on that one). I knew it was going to be a good night.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

Like always, I headed right down front. The sound from the Funktion One sound system was REDONKULOUS. Destructo was up having a hell of a time throwing beats, just lovin’ it, as was the following DJ Skeet Skeet, mixing up everything from Deadmau5 to a chick version of One (The Loneliest Number). The dance floor was heaving like a minor drinking Everclear.

http://www.jefftovar.com/statickaI have a few words of advice for my fellow dancers at the front of the floor: Ladies, you don’t have try and be sexy when you dance. Dancing IS sexy. Humping the stage and giving a Tootsie Pop a blowjob while you slither around puts you in the giant group of LA club kids who are trying too hard. In the words of a master: “Do or do not; there is no try.”

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

And guys guess what? I may be a tiny little blond thing, but do NOT try and push me out of the way on the dance floor. I am a mountain. A bouncing, twisting, dancing mountain. I earn my place at the front of the room on a nightly basis and no jerkface standstill is going to elbow me behind him. I create and keep my dancing space and I do it with a smile.

http://www.jefftovar.com/statickaHere’s a quick tip for everybody: don’t set your FUCK-ing drinks on the shaking table where all of Rusko’s equipment is set up; his laptop, his keyboard, and his boxes full of knobs. Are you fucking stupid? Go suck off a Blow Pop, please. At the back of the room.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

Thankfully they had some security up front; I was actually a bit worried at first about the proximity of Rusko’s setup to the dozens of drunk, air-spanking hands, but a suited bouncer was sent to stand and protect. I wedged in between him and a giant speaker, two unmovable blocks which gave me a sweet little space to dance in for the night.

http://www.jefftovar.com/statickaAs Skeet Skeet is playing I see Rusko start moving his way through the crowd to get down front. People are elbowing him, pushing. They don’t recognize their headliner. I do; he’s a fairly tall guy and besides that he was rockin’ a multicolored fluorescent jacket and a red plaid cap on top of his proto-mullet. He made it to the front and hopped on stage.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

Madness. The density at the front of the dance floor doubled almost immediately. My small space got even smaller. My knees are bruised and bloody this morning from repeatedly hitting them on the edge of the stage which fell right at knee-level for me. I had another new experience last night, and my third dance-related injury of the week: I was dancing so hard that I bashed my head into the speaker. For real. There is only one thing you can do after that happens: laugh at your dumbass self and keep dancing.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

Rusko performed live. Live in a tee shirt that said, “Yes I Am and No, You Can’t.” When I saw him at the Roxy he was on crippled equipment and he STILL killed. But this show, with the sound and the MC and the bass guitar was no comparison. And besides, dubstep just sounds better in a warehousey venue in gritty downtown LA than at a cha cha club in Hollywood. It tastes better.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

Rusko would jump on the bass guitar off and on to further bassify his music because there obviously wasn’t enough. At one point of his set he just turned down the bass as low as it would go, testing the speakers’ limits and drenching us all in the sweet sound of the low end. I love to hear producers playing out their own tracks; Rusko played new stuff, he mixed old stuff, he tweaked every track I love and he sweated his face off. For the first bit of his set, the massive bass vibrations kept bumping off his system, his laptop. Dancers in the crowd offered up their discarded clothing, of which there was plenty, to cushion the equipment. Problem solved.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

During these seconds and throughout the whole night, the very talented MC Rod Azlan kept things going with a melodic style, rapping with almost an island-lilt. So many MCs are a bit too machine-gun monotone for me; Rod Azlan was a breath of fresh air.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

About a hundred people were taking photos and filming, occasionally turning the lights up to get a better shot; I am sure I am in some of them looking like I just stepped out of a shower. The sweat was dripping off my earrings and my necklace and pouring into my eyes, and by the end of the set I could hardly see. I could hardly breathe.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

Just like at the Roxy, Rusko finished off with a little drum and bass insanity- or so we thought. “ONE MORE!” everyone chanted and finally the tall, afroed guy beside me got his wish: he had made a pen and notebook paper sign that said “I AM A COCKNEY THUG” and had been holding it up all night long. He gave it to Rusko as a parting gift, after we had all choked on our own fucked-up ribs.

http://www.jefftovar.com/statickaMY favorite track last night was “Sound Guy is My Target,” which Rusko teased us with early on and then gave full blast closer to the end. Good GOD that track murders. I just got it this week and have been listening to it fanatically; though I really love it at the end of Rusko’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, where it slams down near the end and may be the best climax I have heard on any mix EVER.

http://www.jefftovar.com/staticka

Rusko finished to wild crowd chaos and impromptu huggery at the front of the dance floor; time to chill, right? NO. 12th Planet took the stage and proceed to freaking KILL. I went to get a bottle of water which I downed immediately, hit the bathroom in the very back of the venue where the bass was rattling the mirrors on the wall like a nine point earthquake, then emerged to hear a fatty mix of “Rock the Bells” (MORE LOW JINGLE BELLS IN THE DUBSTEP PLEASE) and “Explicit” by Emalkay: you know, “I beat motha-fuckas! I beat motha-fuckas!” SO good.

http://www.jefftovar.com/statickaAnd the night continued on, and we danced even more, and we swam with delight in an ocean of bass. The water is fantastic, and I am never getting out.

RUSKO @ The Roxy: WE AIN’T SCARED OF THIS

Posted in Artists, From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , on February 19, 2009 by worldromper

p2190024I arrived at The Roxy last night around 11:45 PM, pretty late for what I KNEW a free show and bound to have a huge line. It did. I had heard that Rusko was going on at 1AM, but the bass banging out of the venue sounded super slutty and very familiar. With a line well over one hundred deep, I was certain that there was no way I was getting into the show from the end of the line.

So I cut. I jumped the line and sidled in right up front with a group who had driven an hour and a half to get to the show (and hopefully weren’t quite so drunk on the way). HEY I have a responsibility to report to my readers on the West Coast electronic music scene, and no line is going to stop me from my journalistic duties. Or from dancing my face off to Rusko.

p2190015Turns out the drunk little group I joined had cut in line too; ah well, rules are for other people and other cities anyway. This is LA, baby.

The Roxy must have been at capacity because they were only doing 1 in/1 out, but soon I got the bracelet and went inside.

Sure enough, Rusko was up on stage throwing his signature “hype bass party music” and the crowd down front looked a little nuts, so I headed right that way.

I really like The Roxy! It’s a sweet club with a big dance floor surrounding the stage, bars on the side, and a large raised area in the back for the non-dancers. The sound was decent but could have been louder and there was a major equipment issue with one of the CDJs (as in, it quit working), but Rusko handled it like the rock star that he is. Overall The Roxy has an open feel and a genuine taste of rock and roll and I look forward to going back.

Along my path to the front lines I saw the cruelest sign in the history of humankind: Miller Lite ONLY $9! Wow, seriously? Did you have to put the all-caps on the sign and the exclamation point and everything? Smart-ass bartenders.

p2190041There was no time for grossly overpriced piss-beer however, and I shoved my way to the front and let the music take me. Rukso was GIVING it and the crowd was so thick and so hyphed that the middle of the dance floor was moving as one animal, one rabid frothing screaming jumping humping googly-eyed just-busted-out-of-the-cage-and-now-I-want-to-eat-somebody animal.

Sweat was flinging in the air, beer was flying out of cans, and there was hardly even enough room to smoke a blunt. Hardly ;).The p21900291chick next to me was waving around a cigarette in the middle of the chaos, which was kind of scary, but where could I go? Ah yes, on stage! There’s lots of room up there!

So I jumped right up to dance and was followed by a few more idiots and we got down for real up on stage for a quick minute, but soon the evil-eyed bouncers kicked off the boys and then alas, the girls.

WHEN YOUR SPIRIT IS FLOATING DOWN THAT TUNNEL TOWARDS THE LIGHT

Rusko was having a blast in his neon yellow piped sneakers, acid washed jeans, and the best haircut I have seen all month. I wished I had worn my fluorescent pink fanny pack to go with the vibe. The boy is gorgeous and very expressive with hand gestures, dance moves, and plenty of crowd interaction- my kind of DJ, for real.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S BEHIND THE LIGHT?

Rusko loves his music and his crowd; he played track after track of ridiculously wobbly, whompy, grinding bass and we lapped it up and begged for more. This is not the dark droning dubstep played in shithole basement clubs at sausage fests around the country.

IT’S NOT GOD, IT’S ME

Rusko and his label mate Caspa have injected the genre with a cocky energy and swagger, and his dance floor is an intensely fun experience. This dubstep has a virility to it that is new and fresh and raw; it does not ask you to dance but rather grabs you and throws you against the wall and has it’s way with you. And it is good.

AND I’M GONNA KICK YOUR PONCEY SOUL ALL THE WAY BACK DOWN THE TUNNEL ‘TIL YOU CHOKE ON YOUR OWN FUCKED-UP RIBS!

Rusko played for about an hour and finished up with a drum and bass track, leaving me pondering the relationship and future of…drum and bassstep? Dub and bass? Either way it was nasty shit and for almost the entire set I was in the zone of dance transcendence, screaming and jumping and twisting with my arms in the air and my knees grinding down to the floor, and you know what I mean. At least I really, really hope you do. If not, I prescribe a fat dose of UK dubstep taken aurally on  a regular basis in a crowded, sweaty club on the West Coast. You should get the fever in no time.

NOW, WAKE THE FUCK UP!
