REVIEW: The Do Lab presents Eskmo, Siren & Sugarpill @ King King

***all photos by the amazing photographer and all-around nice guy Aaron Bennett***

Hollyweird was wildly alive on the warm summer night and screaming about it, as usual. Blessed by the gods of street parking, I bounced around the corner towards King King down Hollywood Boulevard, on a star-lined sidewalk as slippery and tilted as the revelers who traverse it. Continue reading

The Do Lab presents: PANTYRAID @ King King in Hollywood MARCH 4

Posted in Events with tags , , , , on February 22, 2010 by worldromper

Pantyraid‘s album The Sauce was most definitely one of my favorite albums of 2009; comprised of Marty Party and OOah of the Glitch Mob, this ass-slapping musical endeavor is ripe with raw emotion and rolling in the most delicious filth you could ever dream of, or as The Do Lab puts it: CAR FLIPPIN’ KRUNK.

Take it from my homie Doktor Krank, who is holding down the bass scene in Poland with his bare hands:

The shattered, looped and glitched hip hop beats colliding with heavy dubstep bass, riding a slow-mo rollercoaster of beautiful, oneiric melodies reminding me of cinematic score or android dreams. Electronic in form and glitchy in contents, with quite widely expanded instrumentation and great focus on details. Heavy, disturbing and unsettling, yet so fragile. No two songs resemble each other but all of them sum up to the top-notch whole.

Ah shit, son! Read the rest of Doktor Krank’s album review on GlitchFM here.

Opening the event are two locals whose names I always love to see on a flyer, Oscure and Henry Strange. BUY ADVANCE TICKETS to the Hollywood event; I guarantee you that this show will sell out.

Buy The Sauce on iTunes or Amazon here and find two sweet Pantyraid mixes to download on Marine Parade here.

WIN TICKETS to see Solvent, Michna & Kether @ The Do Lab on Thursday!

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , , , on November 30, 2009 by worldromper

The Do Lab rolls back into Hollywood and takes it over again this Thursday night at the King King with Solvent, Michna & local freaks Kether.

It should be an interesting mix of music for the night; Solvent and Michna both hail from Ghostly International but with very different sounds and styles. Solvent is “at the forefront of electro-pop’s return to form” and his quirky tracks are sincere without being simple, displaying none of the clash and more of a melodic feel, sweeping across the front of the brain like a cool washcloth.

Michna‘s flavor is groovy and more bass-centered with an old-school slap coming in right when you need it, music with a hip-hop backbone that served him well on his last world tour to seven continents.

And from Muti Music, Space Island and Venice Beach comes Kether, one of my LA favorites that I am always excited to see on a lineup. Spanning several genres from IDM to breaks to dubstep and glitch, this duo delivers clean, organic sets of live electronics. Their sound is wrapped in the colorful strands of a crazy dream, woven through with melody arrangements written in specific notes to stimulate certain energy chakras in the body.

I am pretty sure there are no chakras in the feet, but expect yours to be stimulated, motivated and activated this Thursday night. The Do Lab’s events have sold out in the past, so buy your tickets here in advance, and for the Facebook event page with bios and more information, please click here.

OR try and WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS by posting your answer to this question in the comment section below. The winner will be notified on Wednesday:

The Do Lab presents: Bluetech, Mimosa & Electric Dandelion @ King King

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , , , on November 6, 2009 by worldromper

You probably have noticed that The Do Lab has been taking over King King in Hollywood about once a month these days, spreading the Burner vibe along with freaky art and fatty beats, and for that, LA is grateful. November’s show features fan fav Bluetech, Space Island’s Electric Dandelion, and MY favorite and recent transplant to La La Land (and we welcome you with open arms): MIMOSA.

Click here to read my review of Mimosa‘s latest album Flux for Life on Glitch.FM.

Click here for the Facebook event page and click here for tickets- buy them early because the last Do Lab show sold out and people were crying at the door. Or something like that.

The Do LaB presents DERU, Jupit3r & Beats Antique @ King King 10/22

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , on October 20, 2009 by worldromper

Every time I see Deru out and about on the streets of LA, I harass him about when he is playing out next in our fair city of freaks. Well it’s my lucky week because not only did Deru play at Droid Part 1 this past Saturday before the coppers shut the shit down, but he is playing AGAIN at The Do Lab’s show @ King King in Hollywood this Thursday October 22.

Not only that, but Deru is joined by JUPIT3R who tends to kill as well as Beats Antique. Like every show The Do Lab puts on, you can count on plenty of chewy atmosphere, and a colorful crowd.

Click here for the Facebook event page.

More about Deru, one of my favorites:

Deru is Benjamin Wynn, an electronic music producer from Los Angeles whose fusion of IDM, hip-hop and emotronica pushes open boundaries inside the listener’s mind to create a greater space for his richly textured sound to evolve and room for the future of electronic music to arrive.

Now busy composing music for television, film, dance and performance art, Deru began producing in high school and later obtained a degree in music technology from CalArts. As co-owner of the music and sound company “The Track Team” he recently received an MPSE Golden Reel award nomination for best sound design in 2009 for work on Avatar: The Last Airbender. Further highlighting Deru’s versatility and creative range is his collaboration with classical composer Joby Talbot on a dance score for the Paris Opera Ballet, which like much of this talented producer’s work embodies a seamless and soulful synergy and displays a wide array of musical influences.

Deru’s music is the story of an ancient worship service under star-filled skies which you wake from only to realize you have left the planet; his chilling sounds are akin to robots confessing feelings of love, of an artificial factory gurgling and spurting beneath a grey ocean of space, of a haunted heart that can only sketch an idea of emotion, slick with the goo of a disturbed magnetism.

From the Front Lines: Ana Sia Cripples Shilo

Posted in Females in the Arts, From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , on April 10, 2009 by worldromper

Last night at the King King Ana Sia played EXACTLY the kind of music that I love. EXACTLY.

I go to a fat variety of EDM shows, from dubstep to house to techno to glitch to the occasional fucking rave; I like many types of music and want to write about my experiences to promote the electronic arts and support the community on the dance floor. If a night of music fills me up 75%, that is an epic win.

But last night filled me up to the very top. The sounds blasting out of the speakers from the hands of Ana Sia DID it for me, if ya know what I mean. I left completely satisfied, smile on my head, and a laugh in voice. And HUGE freaking blisters on my toes.

You might expect to get blisters if you dance once or twice a year, but I dance all the time to the music in my head which never stops. Around my living room, in the street, at the coffee shop, all the time. It takes some filthy fucking music to blister me up, and that is exactly what Ana Sia delivered last night: pulverizing waves of bass that make you dance down with your knees bent low, grinding yourself into the dance floor just as the beats are being crushed into your brain.

When I first arrived at the King King, house music was booming onto the floor and I thought: am I in the right club? Is there a King King in Venice or OC that my noob self doesn’t know about? But looking around at the crowd I could tell without a doubt that these were my people: the bass sluts.

Last night I heard three phrases outside the club which always make my heart sing:

1. “Looks like a total Burner crowd tonight- are those hoola hoops?”

2. “You know what music I’m really into these days? Glitch.”

3. “What did you come here for?”

Well as anyone knows, I came to get down; and down, down, down into the dance floor did I get.

Ana SiaAna Sia was getting down too, dancing so much I was wondering how she continued to even play. On the opposite side of her set-up was a table with drinks and water for the VIPsters, and cups were routinely being shaken off the edge by the bass, bass so sick and grimey and given so perfectly- well, this is the music I want pumping out of my tombstone.

And don’t call her a fucking DJ (although I will, on my list 10 DJS I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS WEEK)- nothing was spinning but my head and she was tweaking the sound continually and masterfully through her whole set.

You know when you go out to hear someone you really love, and they play for about 45 minutes, and you’re like, well, that was good but I NEED MORE?

Yeah- that didn’t happen last night. Ana Sia rocked it for like two hours, two hours of some of the best music I have heard in LA, or anywhere. I am filled up to the top.

Thanks for the blisters, Ana Sia!

Yeah, this is the club where I lost my iPhone Friday night, but I won’t hold that against ’em- just charge it to the game. And tequila shots.

SF-based Ana Sia is one of my favorite DJs out there and no missing gadget is going to stop me from being front and center on the dance floor tonight!

Playloop presents: Ana Sia, Jesse Brooks, and Justin Paul with a performance by Archedream at the King King in Hollywood.

I posted this write-up before when she was in Seattle, but what the hell:

Ana Sia’s dynamic delivery of brain-fazing beats has earned this Princess Slay-ah a pioneering place in the West Coast future sound movement. Her love of the low end combined with an intense understanding of the importance of dance to the human soul fuse together to create unforgettable sets of experience, whether she is slamming spots in her home of San Francisco or taking her turn in forests and at festivals around the country.

Let this artist bring you on an eclectic musical expedition into the deepest reaches of your own brain, delighting the rumble-lover in your soul as your thankful body tries to keep up. Ana Sia masterfully mixes a wide spectrum of rhythms with a beautiful fluidity and a delicate sensibility, giving the dance floor a delightfully wonky ride that ends at the corner of bliss and oblivion. Uniting the best elements of dirty dubstep, grimy glitch, and her personalized blend of “global slut psy-hop,” Ana Sia’s sets confirm crunk status of all who dare enter into the seamless sound-world of this woman of whomp.
