Philly B: Dreams and Nightmares *NEW MIX*

Posted in Artists, LISTEN TO THIS with tags , , , on April 9, 2009 by worldromper

So I get about 8000 mixes every morning from my kick-ass music making friends. It’s a lot to sort through; in my opinion there will never be enough hours in the day for new music.

But this is one mix I highly suggest that you listen to, by Philly B out of San Diego. It starts off with track of his called “Waking Light” that weaves in samples from the movie Waking Life (AWESOME fucking movie BTW) which sets the lush, dreamlike nature of the mix. But Dreams and Nightmares is anything but a snore; it grows to a rich depth with an inspiring variety of sounds, picking you up and then easing you back down at the end, better off than you were.

Have a listen: Dreams and Nightmares

Brambylon @ Fool’s Paradise: Desert Techno for Breakfast

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , on March 24, 2009 by worldromper

Can I get some techno with that sunrise?

Something tells me you guys are going to get sick of reading about music parties in the desert, but…

I have found yet another new love.

I consider myself a pretty hard-core camper. I have spent weeks backpacking in the wilderness with nary a shower to my stank. I have camped on beaches and battlegrounds, next to rivers and on top of mountains. I have slept in cow fields, on scrubland, by glaciers, in canoes, on islands, in drippy jungles and in city parks under skyscrapers. But until I moved to Los Angeles, I had NEVER camped in the desert.

The drive from LA was magnificent!

The drive from LA was magnificent!

WTF? It came as a shock to me too. I was so excited about moving here for the music and sunshine that I kind of forgot about the desert. I was all set to go to Burning Man last year for the first time but sold my ticket in order to spend three weeks in Thailand. The beaches were fabulous.

But there is nothing in this world like dancing to a morning set of bangin’ minimal techno while the sun rises over the desert, the fresh rays igniting the bowl of mountains around you into raging pinks and blues.

Sunday Sunrise

Sunday Sunrise

The DJ watches the skies, timing his beats to hit when the ball cracks the horizon. We danced up the sun this weekend, I swear it.

I spent Saturday night out in the desert about three hours southeast of Los Angeles near Borrego Springs, missing the Friday night breaks and dubstep. 😦 But not to fear, techno is here.

Smoke a bowl of mountains

I LOVE TECHNO. For the record. There has been some doubt to my commitment to all genres of EDM, but give me a fucking break. Do YOU have a sign hanging on your wall made by friends that says, “Seattle Techno- Shilo ROX it like U wish U could”? Yeah. Shut UP about me not liking techno, bitches.

For my experience, this was a techno party and it filled me up like a weekend spent outdoors listening to music always does, no matter the setting. The wind was insane. Although it is a pain to be chilling in your tent and still get smacked in the face repeatedly with sheets of sand,

Sergio & Nikki rockin' it Saturday afternoon

the wind always gives a crazy energy to the party, blowing a wild and furious river through the campground. It makes me scream to the moon while I dance, and I love it.

The beats were solid all night long, not one bad set in the lot. I usually try to meet all the DJs so I can thank them for their art and feed them with my words but apparently I was too busy running around like a banshee and hitting myself in the face with my sweet LED glow staff to meet a single one.

What happened to the roof? The wind blew it the hell off, that's what.

Philly B was laying down a fat set when we arrived on Saturday afternoon, and Skandar played a minimal to dubstep to minimal set that worked and worked fucking well, beats sent up to the Milky Way by all of us fools in paradise, aka the dance floor. To all you other DJs, thank you for your music. I am sure that we will meet soon.

The best DJs in the future will not play one genre but many, mixing in the best elements of all of them to create new and exciting sounds. I can hear it in my friends’ sets who play multiple genres. They are better.

Sunrise Shilo Shadow, being all tall and shit.

People can argue and post bitchy comments in forums about genres and labels and glitch hop vs techno vs candycorn all we want (and we will), but good music is good music, period.

Except for gabber. That shit SUCKS.

I dreamt I was in Mexico with the sunshine on my face, traveling across an empty lake bed to reach the back of a bouldered canyon. I found a rocky notch unknown to all but a few naked hippies and random wanderers, a place where the earth had opened up and spewed forth hot streams of water to create sparkling pools and rainbow dog tutus, magic carpets and campfires, big purple afros, glowing hoola hoops, and Darth Vader…dreams can get so weird sometimes…

I dreamt of friends of friends of friends, of green fun noodles and grilled cheese served on the dance floor, of chanting groups of dancers under stars and cliff sides, of trickling streams of consciousness down Mother Earth’s cleavage. I dreamt of a dance floor set in the middle of Stonehenge, with great white artifices jutting above the DJ and spitting forth music from the front and providing cushy nap pillows on the sides so girls could sleep in the sun. In the middle of this ancient dreamscape was a sacred tree not for growing but for climbing- but this monkey held back as I did not want to offend any canyon gods or party organizers. In my dream, that is.

Encircling this crux of energy a billion happy people camped and danced and ate and slept and lived; when you leave humans to their own devices with no rules or traffic or Myspace they always become more colorful and beautiful, louder and happier, they dance and sing more and take off clothes and swirl around and I am in love with all of them.

These magical people with painted faces and feathery nipples handed out hugs and cooked mad amounts of bacon; they howled at the moon through palm leaves in their underoos and worshipped the sun from hot tubs full of hippie stew. Mmm, tastes like rum runner, burning sage, and mushroom chocolates.

I dreamt of bare feet on sun-warmed earth, of sand in my nose, of sleeping on rocks and not sleeping on rocks, of a red rope ladder up boulders that got easier with each traverse. I dreamt of Tecate, and more Tecate, and a little more Tecate. The morning call of “MIMOSA!!!!” echoed throughout the canyon all hours of the day, bringing the shuffling feet of hungover campers out of the tent and into to the warm circle of human beings.

These are my people; the men and women who are on this earth to have fun and make sure you do too, to slap you upside the head when you start feeling bad or acting stupid and remind you what a beautiful, laughter-filled planet this is and how very lucky you are every single day to look into the eyes of people you love and say so, and then dance.

They are the people of my dreams. They make music and share parties and cook curries and dance with fire and inspire me, and I pass their energy on to every single person I meet. My favorite sounds of the weekend were YonaJupti3r, Jockton with some tech house and Philly B who laid down some super fucking tight minimal techno Sunday morning. THANK YOU.

I woke up from this amazing imagination of a Mexican canyon with dirt in my hair, a few more freckles on my face, tons of new friends and the fat smile that only comes from knowing that you are not wasting your life.

And I sure as hell stopped at the border for some tacos before I did.

Where is my Ev, my Tap Tap, my Suda and my Tyler B and my Dylan? My magic photo takers and rave lovers and smile makers? OH YEAH in Seattle. I am only half a blogger without you guys!

“This one time, at Burning Man…”

I know some of you don’t know me (YESSSS there are strangers reading my blog!) so let me just say that I write “naked hippies” the same way I write “techno freaks” or “music nerds” or “crazy dancers”- with all of the love in my heart. Just so you know.
