New Glitch Mob: Low End Theory Podcast

Posted in LISTEN TO THIS, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 3, 2009 by worldromper

You know you want it!

If you haven’t subscribed yet in iTunes to the Low End Theory podcast, now would be a good time to click that button, because this month’s installment features a new music mix from the Glitch Mob as well as from D-Styles, one of the residents at the “BEST UNPREDICTABLE MUSIC NIGHT” in the city as per the LA Weekly. It is free to download and subscribe.

In the mix is that “Breathe a Little” track that I just happened to have stuck in my head ALL DAY yesterday, so much that I almost posted on Facebook: What is this track? Who has it? Where can I listen to it? But it looks like the gods of the internets have answered my personal pleas for breathe.

OH AND it contains that “Mike, Aaron & Eddie” track that some of you have been harassing me about for a while. You know who you are.

Past podcasts include Gaslamp Killer, Mary Anne Hobbs, Nobody, Mono/Poly, Daddy Kev, Nosaj Thing, Ras G, Mike Slott, & SamIYam. Yeah.

Stay tuned for a new album from the Glitch Mob, coming early next year!

Due to popular demand I am writing up my showcase suggestions for the 2009 Decibel Festival which begins TOMORROW!

I have been pimping for this festival for a while; I believe strongly in the smart curation of the party. These lineups are not just thrown together, but rather placed with precision into intelligent mixes of eclectic talent. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I write for Decibel, and am honored to be a part of Seattle’s EDM festival.

I have bolded my top pick for each day, and added links in orange to the showcase descriptions that I wrote up.

Happy Decibel everybody!

Decibel Festival Showcase Spotlight: Starborne Dirty Velvet Afterhours

Posted in Events, Festivals, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 31, 2009 by worldromper

If you like your afterhours dark, deep and dirty – slip on over to the Little Red Studio on Saturday night to wallow in beats so filthy they will stick to your skin for days, no matter how hard you scrub. Soap and water are no match for two rooms of talent, guaranteed to completely contaminate your Decibel Festival experience with a bass crunk-dunk of some of the freshest and finest sounds from the electronic arts underground.

Ana Sia

Ana Sia

The Main Room welcomes 3WS, the combination of San Francisco’s Ana Sia and Danny Corn, whose rough rumblings satisfy the body and the brain to simultaneously activate your limbs and uplift your mind. Mike Slott’s hip hop-influenced imagination and innovative future-funk wraps you in a dirty blanket of experimental movement, while Eprom kicks you in the face with fatty rawness – his slamming and crunchy twist on West Coast Sound is always a party favorite. Mimosa slides in next with sexy basslines and a thick psychedelic density, rolling deep like purple with a gang of dub-infused grooves.

Take

Take

The sounds will be smokin’ heavy in the lounge next door, where LA’s Take keeps the beats on a West Coast lean with his laid-back, acousmatic blend of hypnotic hip hop, otherworldly melodies, and space dust. Kotchy creates top-shelf pop reworkings with toes dipped in electro and hip hop; using live instruments he delivers sets as unpredictable as they are unique. Professor Steve Nalepa teaches us the true depth of dub and the grime of glitch from the beat blackboard, and J Roby of Portland’s Abstract Earth Project experiments with sounds that sooth you right onto the dance floor.

Come out and cloak yourself in delicious Dirty Velvet and realize how much fun getting filthy can be.

Starborne Dirty Velvet Afterhours takes place Saturday, September 26 at Little Red Studio. Click here to buy tickets and for more information about the 2009 Decibel Festival.

Mary Anne Hobbs Tours West Coast in September

Posted in Artists, Events, Females in the Arts, Festivals, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 11, 2009 by worldromper

Mary Anne Hobbs is a hero of mine. She is your hero too if you like dubstep, as her championing of the wobbly genre on BBC Radio 1 is responsible in large part for the distribution of the sound out of the dank basements of the UK and into your earholes.

She heads out on a ten day US tour starting September 10 to promote her new mix release on Planet Mu called Wild Angels (out September 9), check the tour dates and follow along with her tour diary on XLR8R.com right here.

I heard Mary Anne Hobbs perform at Low End Theory with the Glitch Mob and Flying Lotus a few months back (read my review here) and that club was an inch away from complete obliteration. She returns to LA at Low End on September 23 and will also be at the 2009 Decibel Festival in Seattle in the super fucking sweet BBC Radio 1 Showcase going down Saturday night September 26 at Neumos with Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Megasoid, and Mike Slott. Oh yeah, that’s right.

You do not want to miss this woman; she is an amazing force in the international electronic music community. And she absolutely rocks!
