New Dubstep Weekly: HEAVY Launches Thursday, June 23 @ Echoplex

Posted in Events, Music News with tags , , , , , on June 11, 2011 by worldromper

It’s hard to believe that with the undeniable upsurge in popularity that dubstep has experience in the past few years that there is no weekly dubstep night in Los Angeles.

That’s all about to change with the launch of HEAVY, an all-dubstep night on the east side at the Echoplex which will take place every Thursday. This new event is 18+, the cover is $10 and with the big capacity of the Echoplex, should be a rightful banger.

Resident DJs will be local legend 6Blocc, as well as Daddy Kev and DJ Nobody of Low End Theory fame. Special guests will perform every week, and word on the street is that some pretty big names are lined up to play the first several weeks of events.

Find more information on the HEAVY Facebook event page, and follow HEAVY on Twitter for all the late-breaking updates about this new weekly event.

JUAKALI @ Jujubeats w/Bassnectar, Glitch Mob, Z-Trip and more

Posted in Artists, Events, Festivals with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 27, 2009 by worldromper

Juakali at Dubwar in NYCJuakali is an MC and lyrical stylist that I first heard perform with Joe Nice at a Smog event at the Echoplex a few weeks ago; he delivers his rhymes with positive vibes and a melodic island-lilt that perfectly complements the dark waves of dubstep bass. With dubstep’s dirty depth, you don’t need heavy, machine-gun delivered death raps that push you towards the floor; much better is the offset of a river of bouncing vocals like Juakali’s, laid over the beats and bassline like a ribbon of hopeful smoke over the low end wobble. Inhale.

Juakali will be performing this Saturday August 1 at Jujubeats Festival in Orange County. There are several stages of amazing world-class talent, but there’s only one place where you will find me and my bretheren of bass, and that is the front of the dance floor at the Flower Power Garden with Bassnectar, Glitch Mob, Z-Trip, 6Blocc, Kush Arora, Mozaic and Juakali. Nice!

Right now tickets online start at $45 and there is camping available for this one night festie.

Also catch Juakali at this year’s Decibel Festival in Seattle taking place September 24-27 in the clubs, dance floors, bars, streets and parks of the fair Emerald City.

Win tix to Joe Nice @ SMOG w/a Dubstep Haiku!

Want to go to the Smog show tomorrow night at the Echoplex with Joe Nice, XI, Juakali, Spit Brothers, DLX and Kemst but are broke as a joke with no toke?

Post your best dubstep haiku here where Skeet Skeet —> is giving away five pairs of tickets to a broke-ass poet with a brand new cadence. If you don’t know who Skeet Skeet is, you should check out his website anyway because it is hella funny.

You know it’s gonna be a good show when they make a fucking trailer for it:

Tipper, RD & Jupit3r @ Echoplex

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , on May 19, 2009 by worldromper

I know I talk a lot of superlatives but overall, Saturday night at the Echoplex was the best night of music in total that I have experienced my four months in LA. Space Island brought it and straight hippied up that dirty low club and the dance floor was packed as hell all night long until they flipped the lights up near 2AM and we all crawled home.

The Echoplex is right down the street from my place; I arrived early enough and Jupit3r was up and already taking no prisoners. Shilo has a new favorite. The crowd was super sonic; I want to harness the energy of these people and create a separate solar system. Oh wait- I guess that would be Space Island.

For those of you not in sunny and shaky LA (today’s earthquake shut down Disneyland), the Echoplex is the bottom level of the Echo, a nicer, more well-lit theateresque venue. I like the Echoplex much better and you probably would too. Dark, a little dingy, but $5 drinks and plenty of room for moving.

The sound in the Echoplex is good and Friday night it was even better; Space Island totally decked out the venue with purple netting over the outdoor smoke-anything section and the compact stage filled with growing orange and yellow worm-like twists of stuff reaching up to the rafters from the stage. Mmm-hmm.

Jupit3r and RD were both on point; in fact the music all night was top notch from start to finish. Tipper played tons of old stuff that we love and heaps of new stuff that we do now and gave a very high energy performance. The dance floor was going off. It was epic, and I wish you could have been there.

No photos for this shit review, sorry guys. If I see some online I will post a link!

Smog’s New Digs: The Echoplex

Posted in Events, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 12, 2009 by worldromper

LA’s dirty dubstep crew Smog has a new home at the Echoplex in Echo Park, a development that I am especially psyched about because the sound at the Echoplex is dope AND I live about two minutes down the street. Sweet!

Smog’s next show at the Echoplex is May 21 when dubstep gets busy with techno and Smog teams up with my other homies Droid to present a night of techno-dubstep hybrid beats by Appleblim, Hyperactive, Drumcell, and Pawn.

Whether you like techno or dubstep you should come out and check things out; or if you are like me and go nuts for techno AND dubstep, well then- I’ll see you at the front of the dance floor.
