Before you start crying because this party is in San Francisco at 103 Harriet Street and you’re not, just remember that it’s just a six hour drive from LA, a mere hop, skip and a jump away. Growing up in Texas gave me a distorted sense of distance and anything less than an eight hour drive is cheesecake!

Chinese New Year: Year of the Tiger (presented by an-ten-nae and Raindance) will also feature a midnight procession with the White Crane Lion dancers, a dragon dance, mask and tail making, live art and the Omshantea Tea Lounge. And probably some hippies.

For more information please visit an-ten-nae.net or the Facebook event page here.

*THIS JUST IN* A small number of $15 presale tickets are available here.

Due to popular demand I am writing up my showcase suggestions for the 2009 Decibel Festival which begins TOMORROW!

I have been pimping for this festival for a while; I believe strongly in the smart curation of the party. These lineups are not just thrown together, but rather placed with precision into intelligent mixes of eclectic talent. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I write for Decibel, and am honored to be a part of Seattle’s EDM festival.

I have bolded my top pick for each day, and added links in orange to the showcase descriptions that I wrote up.

Happy Decibel everybody!

Decibel Festival Spotlight: MUTI MUSIC Showcase

Posted in Events, Festivals, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on August 29, 2009 by worldromper

Muti Music was born in the hazy land of San Francisco, an area long known for innovative trends in art and technology that provided a perfect setting for the emergence of a new type of experimental bass music thatMUTI MUSICthe region is now known for. Since 2002 this fresh and dynamic label has supported and promoted the wide minds of artists both domestic and international, making a distinctive mark on the evolution of West Coast Sound. Tribal futurists have found a home with Muti, which is the Bantu word for ‘tree’ or ‘herbal medicine,’ and all who hear this young record label’s organic and transformative sound will indeed experience a catharsis by crunk.

Heyoka begins your healing journey with his gurgling and grinding strain of psychedelic beats, the bass drenching your body in heady reverb as light cosmic sounds bubble out of your brain and lift you to another plane. Mimosa’s sexy, dub-infused basslines continue the warm expedition through a beautiful, beat-soaked soundscape, slapping you ever so lightly now and again to make sure you haven’t slipped into oblivion. The founder of Muti Music, Dov, pushes through boundaries with an elevated and emotive sound; his diverse and adaptive style marks the experience of this San Francisco mainstay. Finally an-ten-nae puts the crunchy cherry on top with his slick blend of broken beats, freaky funk and twists from tomorrow, completing your dosage of music as medicine.

Warning: This medicine has been found to be highly addictive and can lead to spastic convulsions, particularly on the dance floor, often resulting in ecstatic joy and a feeling of complete freedom.

The Muti Music Showcase takes place Sunday, September 27 at Sole Repair. For tickets and more information, please click here.
