12th Planet, Lukki & PrEssHa @ SHIFT Friday May 15 in Seattle

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , , , on May 13, 2009 by worldromper

LA’s 12th Planet invades Seatown this Friday night at Shift Dubstep Sessions at Contour; that place is gonna be PACKED to the freaking gills.

I have heard 12th Planet several times since I have been down here in LA and he has never failed to deliver. My favorite set was at the Rusko live show when 12th Planet came on right after Rusko and continued the epic audience massacre like nothin’.

Openers for the night are Seattle dubstep legend Lukki and my good friend and Future DJ Extraordinaire PrEssHa.

Do not sleep on this Shift! And remember, if you walk around inside of Contour barefoot and drunk while smoking cigarettes, they WILL kick your ass out.

50 Reasons Why I Love Seattle

Posted in Lists, Note to Readers with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 15, 2008 by worldromper
  1. Walking around Green Lake, drinking beer and smoking cigarettes and freaking out all the housemoms running with three dogs, a double stroller and a phone in their faces.
  2. The sweaty, dirty, gnarly second room at Chop Suey .
  3. The party at the abandoned milk factory- one of the best in my life, and I was there for about 3 hours. Still don’t know who the DJ was spinning tight glitch hop.***Amended: I DO NOW! Jesse, from Hawaii- met him at a party at the Adriatica, the abandoned restaurant on Dexter***
  4. Sneaking pallets into Golden Gardens, dodging the cops and partying all night with a big ass bonfire. Ask me how.
  5. The smiling househeads.
  6. The serious techno crowd.
  7. Mount Rainier dominating the skyline; it never fails to drop my jaw.
  8. The Loft, a.k.a. The Produkt Dance Studio. One of those places that belongs to the community and is greater than the sum of  its parts; a moment in time that people will look back on in 50 years as an epicenter of arts culture. For real.
  9. Standing at the very bottom of Gasworks Park and feeling like you are in the middle of the fishbowl of Seattle.
  10. When you are in a really shitty mood and the weather just matches perfectly.
  11. Spy parties at Hengst when the outside stage was open. I met many of my best friends and favorite DJs there, aka: “Who the FUCK is that playing the Glitch Mob???” The Seattle midtempo community was born that night.
  12. The crackheads in Pioneer Square, both the creative (“I’ll trade you 12.5 million dollars in stock options for one cigarette”) and the hackneyed (the guy who tells my own jokes back to me).
  13. Under the 99 on-ramp by Contour where everyone goes to smoke.
  14. The Olympic National Park. If you live in Seattle and have not been out to the peninsula, first slap yourself then GET OUT THERE. One of the most beautiful places in the world is right out your back door.
  15. MC Anton Bomb.
  16. Photosynthesis, one of the best festivals and parties of the summer and where I fell in love with techno!
  17. The small size and intimate nature of the EDM community; headliners perform and you can jump right up on stage after the show and thank them.
  18. Value Village, where I get 99% of my clothes.
  19. The Alaskan Way Viaduct/earthquake thing- every time you drive on it, you know if there is an earthquake you are dead, but you do it anyway.
  20. The Stranger. We can all agree on the declining relevance of print publications, but their passionate adherence to snarky, critical, smart-ass reporting makes me laugh, every week.
  21. Rain. You kind of have to love it to live here, right?
  22. Truckasauras.
  23. How everyone FREAKING HATES the Ducks. The amphibious tour-vehicle kind, not the quacking kind. NON LE CANARD!
  24. Our fair weather sports fans, so very fickle.
  25. DECIBEL FESTIVAL.
  26. How you can smoke weed ANYWHERE in public and no one gives a shit.
  27. City kids putting flyers everywhere, even on tents at festivals and parties WAY out in the boonies.
  28. Hempfest, the largest protestival for the reform of marijuana laws IN THE WORLD.
  29. The Pacific Science Center- lasers and raves and those sweet multi-colored hoop things!
  30. Discovering that friend after friend after friend is a DJ.
  31. The SeaMonster in Wallingford BEFORE Andrew sold it. R.I.P.
  32. Springtime and its accompanying pink, purple, white and yellow trees.
  33. How people put ‘THE’ in front of club names: THE Contour, THE Rebar, THE Chop, THE Noc- you know you’ve done it.
  34. NWTekno.org and the living, vital community it supports.
  35. Sailing, always amazing whether you are on Lake Union, Lake Washington, or Puget Sound.
  36. novaTRON.
  37. How West Seattle is practically BFE- is it even a 206 area code?
  38. Seattle style: city kid hipster with a dash of emo, and rolled up jeans are always okay thanks to the weather.
  39. Broadway. Gritty, colorful, beautiful Broadway.
  40. Doin’ the Tour- popping around Pioneer Square on weeknights, hitting all the dance clubs and saying hi to friends.
  41. The uber-politeness of drivers: you go first, no YOU go first, no you- all the while saying FUCK YOU BASTARD MOTHERFUCKER under their breath.
  42. The dirty, genuine, underbelly feel of the city which is unique in this world. We love the dirt like we love the rain; squeaky clean-green Portland we are NOT (thank God).
  43. Being on the dance floor of Noisemaker’s set one very late afterhours party watching this kid just standing there beside me with his mouth open saying, “WHAT?!?!?”
  44. Seattle cops who, for example, might pull over a license-less friend and passenger wearing a mullet wig and then give them back their bag of Chronic and 12 Xanax and send them on their way with the words, “Don’t kill yourself.”
  45. RENEGADE PARTIES and dancing on the rocks under 1st Avenue Bridge in February at 5AM in the freezing cold wearing a pink bikini and white net shirt.
  46. Working in Fremont and telling people my office is located between “the troll and the rocket.”
  47. Riding fat snow in the Cascades. Holy shit.
  48. Our progressive, educated, tolerant, liberal, book-reading citizens.
  49. Vito’s- classic Italian gangster kitsch with two disco balls and a bartender who pours ’em right.
  50. The amazing, open, and smiling electronic music community who has made me feel more welcome, loved, at home, and a part of something than I have ever felt before in my life. Thank you.

AND 5 Things I Won’t Miss About Seattle:

  1. Cougars fans. “GO COUGS!” is like the mating call of the asshole. I hear it and run the other way.
  2. Passive-aggressiveness, particularly in those with a Y chromosome. GROW SOME FUCKING BALLS, PEOPLE!
  3. The Noc.
  4. Overcast weather with no sun for months- makes Shilo want to die.
  5. The lack of media coverage of the electronic music scene in favor of the “roots/folk rock” music scene. BARF.

So I really had trouble thinking of 5 things I do not like about Seattle! I have lived many places in this world (Austin, Maine, Paris, New Zealand) but have never had a home like this. Much love, rainy city!

Going Down This Week (Nov 24-30)

Your weekly list of Shilo-approved electronic music events in Seattle:

Most of you are probably making Thanksgiving plans, driving to see the family, gathering friends around to eat pie and shit. Whatever. Have fun with your lame-ass holiday.

For the rest of us to whom the holidays mean nothing, guess what? It is time to party. Here:

Tuesday:

  • Naha Army at the Grotto (the basement of the Rendezvous in Belltown): bring your arms and your legs and party with Naha, MC Anton Bomb, Break 6, Mickey Procon aka Cory Popcorn, and lots of art! FREE!
  • VIBE at Contour with BANGIN’ TECHNO from Travis B, Ctrl_Alt_Dlt, pantycontrol, and Michito
  • M83 at Neumos- Electropop francais. All the music nerds will be here, gazing at their shoes.

Wednesday (Thanksgiving Eve!):

  • Kraak and Smaak at the Nectar bring one of the Netherland’s hottest acts to Fremont. Hot and sweaty.
  • Chilled-out dance church at the Church of Bass
  • GOBBLE ON DEEZ has a horrible name and even worse flyer (both no doubt dreamed up by some one with a y chromosome), but it is in the sweet new underground venue with two huge rooms in SoDo I have been hearing so much about. There are about 20 DJs but I am looking forward to Zacharia, Rob Noble, Manahan, Goner, Pressha, Noisemaker, and Northstar. $10, BYOB

Thursday:

  • Midtempo Madness: FREE glitch hop and crazy mid tempo shit at the Crimson C. NOTE: this is the last Thursday or any day you should ever go to Crimson C. They backed out on us for the use of their venue 1.5 weeks before our show IN TEXT. Bullshit business practices and you should no longer support this bar EVER. After Thursday.

Friday: LYNZIE’S BIRTHDAY!

  • Herbaliser at Nectar performing as full live band, Sun Tzu Sound opens.
  • Analog at Rebar: Deep House from Deep Space. Househeads rejoice.

Saturday:

  • Zacharia and Rob Noble at Onset, if ya missed ’em at Gobble on Deez

From the Front Lines: Thursday Night

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 14, 2008 by worldromper

‘From the Front Lines’ is where I will recap what went down and what went downtown on the streets of Seattle. Last night things were bangin’ and I had a good night- but not too crazy, we have a BIG weekend ahead!

First of all, the rumor floating around last night that KiloWatts will be playing with Bassnectar in Bellingham on Sunday night is WRONG, as Jamie confirmed for me this morning. However he will be in Bellingham on Thursday the 20th with Vibesquad, which will be a giant show and now brings up the dilemma: do I drive to Bellingham on Thursday or stay in town to see my friend Rafael at the Triple Door followed up by the OTT/Phidelity show at Nectar? Decisions, decisions.

Plus there is the option of driving to Bellingham on Sunday to see Bassnectar again. It’s not that far.

So last night my first stop (after Dante’s, what???) was the Crimson C where Hendrik was playing psy-something and a few peeps were really rocking it on the dance floor. I am not the hugest psy-whatever fan but I really was enjoying the music and had a fun dancing to the faster beats.

Down the road Trinity was going OFF- could have been the $1 shots and no cover they had going on. The drum and bass in the blue room wasn’t doing a whole lot for me but Kreeper was going freaking nuts in the Main Room; I love that guy- he has a great time playing, he has great energy and it just spills out all over the dance floor. And the ladies agree- Trinity was FULL of hot chicks busting it and I got to hang out and dance with my chicas, which is always fun. Girls seem to have more fun than boys, right? Maybe those are just my friends.

Back at Crimson C Aaron Hoyle was playing some weird bassy tracks, kind of freakish and odd which is just how I like things. Around 1AM Noisemaker jumped back on and we all (like all 5 of us) got down proper. He played the new Bassnectar EP with the super-weird Beats Antique Roustabout song; evil carnival music for the bearded lady and three-necked man and shit. I can’t remember which track he was mixing in with it but it was super fucking sweet. Bassnectar on Saturday is going to be so insane. I am so excited. You MUST go to the show.

I shut down the dance floor at Crimson then popped over to Contour for the one year anniversary of Booty Call where Mamma Zona, Lovevirus and others were STILL celebrating Awggie’s birthday. Naha was spinning mad hard-core, break-core, I-don’t-know-what core beats and we were getting down for a while. I kept trying to leave and then getting sucked back onto the dance floor because the music was so good! This happens A LOT to me. I ran into some fun and unexpected friends which always makes the night more interesting!

OKAY so tonight- BALLS OUT at Rebar! Get out those red, white, and blues! I am so excited for this weekend, and my very good friend and fellow dancing freak Tricia will be in the house (literally) to party with us; she has been in Cali for a while and I am so stoked to see her tonight!

AND YOU! See you on the dance floor,

Shilo
