Crystal Method Video Shoot in Hollywood
Tuesday I went to check out a Crystal Method video shoot in Hollywood in a studio just off Santa Monica Blvd. The video was for the next single “Come Back Clean” off their album Divided By Night, a song which features the vocals of Emily Haines of Metric fame and beats from drummer Samantha Maloney (Hole, Motley Crue, Peaches).
All was quiet and hush-hush on set when I arrived at the chilly studio; it was a very different setting from the Infected Mushroom shoot that I attended which featured dozens of loud, chatty extras and a director with a megaphone.
The concept of the video has Crystal Method’s two electronic rock musicians, Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland, switching off as cab drivers while picking up a rainbow of passengers (hot chicks, of course) who then fight, make out and otherwise get into drama. I heard very precious little of the actual song but was very interested to see the process which the video team created the setting: fake rain, steamers to fog up the cab windows, flashing strobe lights in blue, yellow, red and basically all those Hollywood tricks.
Neatest of all was the storyboard of comic-like strips that told the scene progression in picture form and listed the characters: smooth girl, preppy girl, punk girl and dolled-up girl. How fun it would be to be the mind behind video story design!
The director was très français with a mustache and everything and I was happy to see several females working in such a male-dominated environment. I didn’t get to talk to the superstars as they were busy filming, but will definitely watch for the video to come out in a month or two.
