Pure Filth Presents BASSFACE Jan 30 w/JAKES & Take

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 21, 2010 by dancefever5000

Is Sam XXXL‘s sound system the best on the West Coast?

Come and judge for yourself at BASSFACE presented by Pure Filth on Saturday, January 30 and for the love of filth and all else that is holy, GET THERE EARLY. Not LA-early, which is midnight, but for reals yo: early. As the power of bass music is growing exponentially, the venues can’t keep up with the crowds so if you want to share in this magical night, head to Lot 613 earlier than you think you should.

Headlining this time around is Jakes, a dubstep legend from Bristol who smashes every speaker he touches, and Take, a local beat hero who crushes genres together in the most delightful and unusual ways.

And of course it doesn’t stop there: The Professionals, Jaybird, DLX, Druley, MC Kemst and bad ass visuals by Dr. Strangeloop complete the night.

THE VENUE Lot 613 is fully licensed (so the cops can’t fuck with us) with two large rooms, and extra security has been added this time around to make that line go faster. Show is 18 & up, 21+ to drink and is 9PM-3AM. See you on the dance floor.

BASSFACE REEEWIND! Friday January 8 DO IT

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 5, 2010 by dancefever5000

So the last Bassface party on December 26 had some uninvited guests- the LAPD, who shut that shit down shortly after midnight.

For all of those whose night was cut short, and for those like me who were out of town and missed it completely, Pure Filth is doing a reeeeeeee-wind. I am normally not the biggest fan of the rewind but in this case I’ll make an exception!

If you still have your wristband from the event on December 26, bring it for $5 entry and “a magic ticket for something to make you smile.” For all others the cover is $10 all night, and the shit goes down at Lot 613, a fully licensed warehouse venue- in other words, fuck tha police.

FACE GOT BASSED at Pure Filth with Joker & Nosaj Thing

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 30, 2009 by dancefever5000

Oh wow. It’s Monday and my cells are still shaking like little jello cubes from the massive thunderstorm of bass that slammed down on Saturday night. BASSFACE was ON.

Dubstep is very sound system-dependent music. Sure, every electronic genre hits best blasting out of a ridiculous stack of speakers, but dubstep practically requires it. On a rig like Pure Filth‘s, dubstep comes to life, lumbering at you like a mutant animal from a feral dream, with fur and horns and claws and big teeth and wild eyes and a crushing gate. If you haven’t heard dubstep on a proper sound system, well…you are hearby invited to the next Pure Filth show.

Lot 613 is a neat venue with somewhat of a playground feel; with separate indoor and outdoor areas there is plenty of room to run around, space for artists to do their thing, a line of booths for smoking or canoodling and a snack bar for late-night munchies. Stacks of television sets served as visuals fodder for Strangeloop and Kemst was jumping around working things into a lather. Sadly I missed Heru‘s opening set, but by 11PM the line outside was growing quick like a black snake firework and Novocaine9 was inside thrilling the early crowd, which was as hopped up and lively as always. The energy in Los Angeles is irrefutable; it seeps into every cracked smile at each underground venue, sparking ideas in the minds and fire in the eyes of the dance floor. LA is always ready for a good time.

Soon Nosaj Thing was on; this young producer has a legion of loyal followers who were out in force to hear his unique take on beat music, fusing several imaginable genres and then some. Crafty and sincere, the artistry evident in each layer of sound he lays down is always intriguing and entertaining; his tracks seem to dance in the air, deft and powerful castles of sound whose beauty is undeniable.

The crowd was ready and salivating for Joker; after an earlier customs snafu I was just glad to see he made it back into the States and was able to perform the show. MC Nomad is a complimentary match for the unassuming DJ whose stage presence belies the massive tracks he throws down, tunes so fresh they are still rubbing their eyes and shaking off the dew. And shake we did; colossal sound filled the room and allowed Joker a full sonic range and no excuses. There were too many rewinds for my taste; of course one rewind is usually too much for this dancer who wants to dance, not stop the music!

But Joker delivered a major set chock full of mountainous drops and we ate it up, swimming like lost fish in the sea of sound and putting our bodies to the bass limit, the sub-bass frequencies filling up every cell and every nucleus of every cell. The Pure Filth show Saturday night felt like the crux that the whole dubstep world was rotating on; in LA we tend to think we live in the center of the entertainment universe (because we do), but things are happening in the world of electronic music in this city right now that send a lightening bolt of electricity up my spine. The enthusiasm is undeniable and irresistible, and the Pure Filth show on Saturday night was absolutely delicious.

After Joker, the Professionals came on and proceeded to mop up the dance floor with what was left of people’s brains; in my case that was not much. However I know I wasn’t the only one wishing that the party went at least until 4AM! As always Pure Filth put on a quality show, achieving the right feel with the crowd and creating a swirl of energy, and I wanted it to swirl right on into the morning light. But I had more parties to go to, more dance floors to shut down, more friends to hug and more ass to shake, so I walked off into the fine LA evening, a deeper bass bounce in my step and a face full of Pure Filth, AKA: THE BASSFACE.

Win tix to Joe Nice @ SMOG w/a Dubstep Haiku!

Posted in Events, Music News, Note to Readers with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 12, 2009 by dancefever5000

Want to go to the Smog show tomorrow night at the Echoplex with Joe Nice, XI, Juakali, Spit Brothers, DLX and Kemst but are broke as a joke with no toke?

Post your best dubstep haiku here where Skeet Skeet —> is giving away five pairs of tickets to a broke-ass poet with a brand new cadence. If you don’t know who Skeet Skeet is, you should check out his website anyway because it is hella funny.

You know it’s gonna be a good show when they make a fucking trailer for it:

Serious Dubstep @ Pure Filth: 16 Bit Blows Up Warehouse in LA

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 31, 2009 by dancefever5000

Overheard yesterday around 1AM:

“This is some SERIOUS dubstep!”

Hell yes it was at BassFace last night as Ras G, The One, The Professionals, 16 Bit, Broken NoteJ Da Flex and many more brought down a seething torrent of dubstep fire onto the open-mouthed masses. In the very best way possible.

The Pure Filth party was located in secret warehouse #823 in my beautiful city and I arrived just as brotha from anotha planet Ras G was laying down IDMy smack on the dance floor like tar, wearing a thicker dubstep lean than I have heard in his sets before. His shit is bomb, and Flying Lotus (who was in the crowd) agrees with me.

Ras G’s music is tall; like that of Flying Lotus, the hip hop-heavy electronica/the electronica-laced hip hop soars over the heads of the dance floor, and some can’t keep up. The beats make you work a little harder to dance; your brain scrambles to process the music out through your body, and you must create new moves on the dance floor as the set plays out.

It is a challenge for me, and I am a good dancer. I know I am a good dancer because gay guys always want to dance with me. With music like Ras G’s I can feel my musical brain evolving as I dance. It is much more difficult and much more fun to dance to this music than say, house music, which I consider the junior high cheerleader of EDM (fun, easy to like, accessible and popular but none too deep).

As a dancer I prefer the whacked up beats, the broken whomps, the challenge for my brain to process it all and move my body accordingly. I like to walk off the dance floor a better dancer, and if that means working harder to keep up so be it. Don’t worry guys; dance floors of the world will catch up to your music someday.

Now it has come to my attention in LA that I can sneak anything into any club (little blond girl ain’t doin’ no harm) which is how I ended up at the party with a flask full of vodka. When I first arrived at the massive brick warehouse building, I went in the wrong entrance and walked around three stories of locked doors, all the time hearing the thick basslines from the party and feeling like I was in a choose-your-own-adventure book, trying door after door.

My wanderings led me to the roof, a vast expanse which was wide open under the orange-purple LA sky and completely empty except for my new friend Lucy and her evil chihuahua, Baby.

“Got any weed?” she asked.

“No. Got some vodka.”

I hung out for a minute before heading back down to find the proper party, a few levels and a couple doors down. You know that vision in your head of a perfect underground warehouse party in LA? This was it. Pure Filth is the crack.

Two rooms of music, two toilets, cheap drinks with cheap liquor, random visuals, bouncing faces barely recognizable in the deep darkness and indeed, lots of filth. The sound was reverberatingly fantastic, the floor sticky with spilt alcohol, and the crowd had that wild look in their eyes. I threw my jacket into the corner and headed straight to the front of the dance floor. There is no place on earth where I am happier.

The only time I spent in the drum and bass room was to buy water at the bar and to stand in line once for the bathroom where I hogged the neighboring fan and danced. A plush couch sat under a window, and for some reason I decided to worm my way out past the thick curtain to see what was there; I discovered a fire escape with two ladders leading up the exterior of the building.

So I crawled right up the two stories (ladders are made for climbing, right? Sorry Mom) to find myself back on the warehouse roof which I explored with my new friend Era. I realized I had discovered the secret passageway into the party. Sweet. I LOVE rooftops.

After howling at the city for a minute I popped back down through the window into the DnB room (people are like, WTF?) and went home. To the dance floor, that is. I had a freaking blast dancing last night, the most straight FUN I have had in a while. The wooden floor was shaking underneath my feet like it was alive and the blast of bass from the speakers in front of my face cooled me off in the dripping hot room.

All the DJs were having as much fun as I was, smoking mad bluntage, passing around beers and drinking Jack Daniels straight from the jug. Kemst was up spitting rhymes all night, tireless as usual, his voice a nice knife-slice in the dark and dreamy dubstep.

I missed most of The One’s set because I was running around on the roof, but The Professionals were thick and heady and then 16Bit and Broken Note just went wild with their slaphappy bass, brought down on our heads like the smack of hand on ass. They fucked up a bit (may have had something to do with the giant bottle of JD) but we cut them some slack in favor of the bass, coursing through the room like a monsoon. People were screaming and dancing and going nuts. Dubstep makes people straight flip out for some reason; probably because it’s FUCKING BOMB ASS MUSIC. Anyone who doesn’t like dubstep has not been to a show like last night. Want to convert a friend to the dark side? Bring them to a Pure Filth party.

I tried to show my friends the secret stairway to heaven which led to the roof; alas the promoters had figured out the loophole and boarded up the window, deciding that having party people climbing up ladders on the outside of the building two stories to the roof and beyond was probably not a good idea. Ah well, there will be other rooftops.

J Da Flex closed things out; after dancing for hours at the front of the floor lost in bass, I turned around and noticed the room had emptied considerably. It was 4:20. I found my jacket thrown in the corner and left, and woke up this morning dancing in my head.

Good shit, thanks for the party guys! The dubstep scene in LA is OFF! FUCKING OFF! Next up, Pure Filth will be bringing us Skream and Benga in June- looks like it’s going to be  dark and dirty summer.

If you missed 16Bit and are feeling superlame this morning, chin up, bitches! The duo performs again in LA at Low End Theory on June 24; I will be in the crowd no doubt. Scratch that; I will be up front.

CASPA, Nick Argon & more @ Smog LA

Posted in From the Front Lines (Show Reviews) with tags , , , , , , , on January 26, 2009 by dancefever5000

I love Smog. I love the way it gets inside of you, the things it does to your body, that slick feeling on your skin, that soapy taste in your mouth. I love the moment when it hits your brain; I love it when you have to gasp for air, stepping back for a moment to catch your breath with a smoke outside in the city air. I need more Smog in my life.

I’m not talking about the fat layer of pollution that hovers over Los Angeles some days, as thick as the people’s love of the city itself. I’m talking about the best dubstep show I’ve ever been to in my life.

Smog is a local dubstep crew prone to throwing sick parties for over two years now, and last night was the debut of a virgin warehouse venue downtown as well as one of the dopest lineups yet to date: CaspaNick Argon, and hella locals: Pawn, Emu, Pablo Hassan, DJ Steady and Kemst.

I arrived early, before 11PM, and the line in the alley outside the old brick warehouse was already about 25 deep. Obese bass was bouncing right out the door and sticking to the walls outside, shaking the night. Everyone around me was straight-ADHD twitching and squirming on their feet, calming their psychoses by the chained intake of nicotine and green. I knew I had chosen wisely for my first dubstep show in LA.

Everyone loves a warehouse party, right? Can someone out there tell me I’m wrong? Theses venues sweat an ethos of underground that drips off their wooden rafters and into our brains; the level floor gives an egalitarian feel, for you can wander around from the back to the front and back, adjusting your position and vantage point all night long. The party last night was thick with blunt smoke- not weed smoke, BLUNT smoke. I love dubstep, and I love LA.

I pushed my way to the front where local talent Pawn was frothing up the dubstep-loving crowd into a lather and dancers were already sweaty and ready for the big names for whom they were waiting.

I have been a gigantic fan of Nick Argon of San Francisco since a friend handed me a CD several months ago that I have probably listened to hundreds of times. Seriously, hundreds.

The founder of Argon Records consistently throws down seamless mixes of high-quality tracks from start to finish. His label is becoming more and more an influence on the global dubstep scene which is taking a turn to the even-darker side, the even-dirtier hyped-up bassy party side created with dance floors in mind, a shift that seems to be contaminating almost every genre of electronic music these days. Deep down inside everyone is a bass slut and you know it.

“Dubstep is boring.” I have heard this almost as many times as I have heard “Techno is repetitive.” Guess what, people: You are not listening to the right kind of dubstep. I heart this genre not only because it was the first kind of electronic music I fell in love with, on the beaches of New Zealand, but because it lends itself to my favorite and my default dance move: the bounce. Dubstep is SEXY, dirty sexy, and I think the legions of chicks humping speakers last night will agree with me.

Dubstep speaks to the dark streak down all of our backs, to the deep and defiled recesses of our minds which cause us to dance down, down, down to the floor. But there is always the upbeat- the glimmer of hope in the darkness, which could not be more appropriate as this country and indeed the world have just entered a new year and a new era (you guys all felt the world shift last Tuesday, right?). Dubstep encompasses the range of being within each human, from our first to our seventh chakras, from the dark to the light, from despair to hope. Nick Argon delivered a high-energy performance last night and his set threw the dance floor into bouts of hysteria.

And then Caspa took to the decks, and all hell broke loose. Caspa, along with his label-mate Rusko, are dominating the UK dubstep scene and injecting a wild party vibe into the music, creating a hybrid sound that does not step, it stomps.

It seemed like the whole Smog crew was up on stage to dance and throw their hands up to this king of grime who played an all-vinyl set and seemed to almost tease the thirsty crowd with each record he pulled from his bag. At a really good show, there comes a point where you cease actually dancing and just go fucking crazy, screaming with a wide open smile, body in near-seizures, arms and legs slinging and kicking all over, getting hit in the face and beer in your hair and not caring, grinding p1250033with your dance floor mates in a communal orgy of movement. This was pretty much the state of the world for Caspa’s entire set, his entire, bwompy, filthy, bassinsane set.

It’s all about the bwomp now- whomp is SO one post ago.

Caspa bombarded us with almost every track I knew that I loved, including his mind-melting remix of TC’s Where’s My Money, which threw the crowd into even greater states of ecstasy. On Jahova by Rusko he would cut the sound and sing, “dum, dah dah dum, dah dah duh duh dum.” and soon we were all dah-dumming along. He clearly enjoyed delivering the crowd into dance delirium, smiling and downing beer throughout his set.

MC Klemst, Smog, LA

MC Kemst, Smog, LA

The tireless MC Kemst (who rolled up to the party on a bike, STYLE!) added to the hyphed-up atmosphere with cries and commands not just to get your hands up but to believe in yourself, that no matter what your struggle, you were dancing tonight as part of the international electronic music community, supporting the artists and pushing sound in new directions. Usually not a big fan of MCs (shut up with your words, gimme the beats!) I really liked this one and thought he added to the already out-of-control night.

Caspa brought a bag of at least 50 CDs with him which Kemst threw into the crowd, earning major points in my book and no doubt many others as well. The MC reminded us, this music is for you and your friends, burn that shit and hand it out. Major points AND I have a sweet new CD (though my shorty-self failed to catch any of the vinyl or baseball caps which frisbeed their way into grubby paws throughout the night).

I left last night soaking wet, ringing out my denim skirt. My hands were so slippery with sweat it had been hard to take pictures for Donte. One MAJOR complaint (though it was a new venue so I will cut Smog some slack): NO WATER. I had brought $22 to the show, $20 to get in and $2 to tip for glasses of water- however at the bar they only had bottled at $4 a pop. No worries- I’m not too good to drink from the bathroom tap. I wandered to the back however and saw that it was Port-O-Potty city. Now, I AM too good to drink from a Port-O-Potty hand washing station. C’mon peeps if you want dancers to go crazy and sweat and freak out all night, you HAVE to give us water, even us poor unemployed fuckers for whom spending money on shows comes before food and water. Hey, my priorities are in line. Dehydrated, but in line.

So if there is anyone out there who still thinks dubstep is boring after reading my account of last night, I don’t think I can help you. Just remember: in many languages, you cannot say, “I am bored.” You have to say, “I bore myself.”

NOTE: I know my pictures kind of SUCK and I can’t blame it all on slippery, sweaty hands. What’s up with all the little dots? Can someone help me out here? I’m a lover not a fighter, not a photog but a writer. And a broke-ass poet with a brand new cadence. Thanks.
