The 7th annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival is happening October 12-14 in the shadows of the otherworldly Joshua Tree National Park. The three-day festival unites the overwhelming spirit of desert freedom, potent live music and a family-friendly atmosphere, creating a magical oasis for music lovers. Performances alternate on two music stages so you don’t miss a beat. The magnificent outdoor setting, creative Kidsville schedule, shaded music bowl, and wide spectrum of yoga classes further inspire, intrigue and invite festival goers.

The line-up includes a truly transcendent experimental super group featuring Steve Kimock (Zero, KVHW), Bernie Worrell (P-Funk, Talking Heads), Wally Ingram (David Lindley, Sheryl Crow) & Andy Hess (Black Crowes, Govt Mule). Grammy award winner Anders Osborne (from scorched earth rock to heartfelt sweetness) will grace the stage, as will Howlin’ Rain (ferocious, impassioned rock n’ roll), Sean Hayes (über soulful songsmith), Revoltaire (gut rattling psychedelic blues), Musketeer Gripweed (rousing revival time), Birds of Chicago (bewitching classic soul), and Earl Thomas (high wattage electro blues). Amy LaVere & Shannon Mcnally (alt-country angels), the Dead Winter Carpenters (roots infused high energy Americana), Professor Burns & the Lilac Field (poetic and rootsy á la Woody Guthrie), DJ Jeremy Sole (blues revival remix set), and Tim Easton (troubadour extraordinaire) bring their talents to the high desert. Rounding out the roster are the Shook Twins (angelic harmonies), Trevor Green (mesmerizing multi instrumentalist), Shovelman (psychedelic folktronic blues) & the California Honeydrops (joyous musical gumbo).

Benefit Concert – Sunday evening, October 14, festival headliner Wally Ingram and his super group band mates Steve Kimock, Bernie Worrell, and Andy Hess will be performing along with Sean Hayes, Earl Thomas, Birds of Chicago, Tim Easton, and more guests TBA. Proceeds benefit the LivingSchool and Transmission. The LivingSchool is a home school learning cooperative that offers academic sessions for students and enrichment. Set apart from other up-and-coming West Coast bass music producers by his extensive world-touring history and performance experience, Russ Liquid brings a much-needed injection of melody and emotion to the thriving dance floor community.

Classically trained on the piano, trumpet, saxophone and flute, Russ Liquid spent his early 20’s touring the Caribbean and South America as part of a jazz quintet, playing resorts, cruise ships and dance clubs. Once the young composer was introduced to electronic music, his course in life was forever altered, and he soon discovered a new home in the international electronic music community.

Hand-crafting sexy sounds by blending elements of many genres together, Russ Liquid applies the colorful tones of instrumental music to the realm of the beats with dance floor-rocking results. This talented producer has found an entirely new palette to “paint” with, and now he seeks to bridge the gap between classical and modern music with new electronic technology and sonic possibilities.

Ample chord changes, foreign sounds and grimy drums on a thick layer of bass give Russ Liquid’s music a symphonic quality that hooks the brain with its unique twists and turns. A Portland native who has recently transplanted himself to Oakland, Russ Liquid has found success in the past half-decade performing throughout the United States and Canada with groups such as March Fourth Marching Band, Oregon Live Orchestra and Satori Social (Bluetech’s live band). Now this eager artist and performer has stepped out onto his own, bringing a refreshingly melodic approach to the bass music movement.

Celebrating the release of travel documentary Outliers Vol. 1: Iceland, this unique audio/visual event at Lincoln Hall features multimedia performances by several cutting-edge electronic music producers, including Deru with Scenic, Shigeto, Sweatson Klank and Loscil.

With dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions and a countryside carved out by glaciers, Iceland is a mountainous island of desolate beauty, ancient Viking lore and raw nature: unpolluted and inspiring.

In October 2011 with support from a successful Kickstarter campaign, Chicago film collective Scenic traveled to the remote Icelandic countryside alongside photographers Tim Navis + Kim Holtermand and music composer Deru. With a goal to create a series of improvised, collaborative short films, the group documented their experiences with the stark landscape, cultural traditions and Icelanders encountered along the way.

The resulting full-length documentary – entitled Outliers, Vol. I: Iceland – will be released in June 2012, along with a companion soundtrack compilation featuring thirteen contemporary classical composers and electronic music producers.

To celebrate the release, Scenic will join Deru onstage one evening only for a live, multimedia A/V performance inspired by the journey. Soundtrack contributors Shigeto (Ghostly International), Loscil (Kranky), and Sweatson Klank (Alpha Pup) will perform full sets.

The first 200 ticket holders who arrive are invited to an exclusive live screening of the film and Q&A session with the artists in advance of the show.

Making music is an act of devotion for Seattle’s Subaqueous, who brings the mysteries of the subconscious to light in his debut full-length album Immerge. Working with a variety of guest artists from vocalists to udu players, Subaqueous creates a fluid, well balanced album of downtempo electronica inhabited by tribal drums, deep grooves and vagrant melodies.

Using gypsy scales to create an enigmatic vibe, Immerge evokes an inner journey through trance-inducing basslines that roll beneath a heavy beauty. The unsettlingly beauty of “Cryptic” lurks beneath a broad bassline, brushed across by astral winds until it gradually flows over. “Flux” builds its energy to a gritty intensity with a drop that slides in sideways, while “In Spire” uses loose drums and low lights to breath fresh air into a shimmering groove.

From soothing tracks with gritty edges to hip-shaking world sounds and spaced-out desert jams, the distinct emotional atmosphere of Immerge creates a contented glow of devotion that never has to come up for air.

Dark, ghostly sounds – eerie noises and ethereal floatiness are omnipresent in Harris’ new outing. As with most of her output to date, the use of tape loops, field recordings and submerged atmospherics lends a really dream like quality at the one extreme and the manifestation of substance abuse at the other, and this album is no different – additionally the notion of adding Wurlitzer loops and vocal tracks from Liz’s Grouper archives are mixed, spliced and processed live from an array of Dictaphones and tape players.

Emotionally resonant music that exists only in whatever time and space you happen to be in, Violet Replacement is a completely fluid experience that is at once calming, relaxing and inspiring. Liz Harris is taking the album on tour at the moment; this is something which she is not always at ease doing, in the past she has confessed to being a homebody. It will get its debut airings throughout Europe over the coming weeks and months – she’s just completed dates in the UK, Ireland and Germany and also played gigs in Sweden and Denmark. The album has been really well received wherever it’s been played and has had rave reviews.
