About the Joshua Tree Music Festival:

Founded in 2002 by music enthusiast Barnett English, run on corporate-free, community-centric power, JTMF captures the DIY funkiness of the high desert, turning rusted junk into striking art, old trailers into stages, and a shaded stretch of campground on the outskirts of the infamous national park into a serious dance party. Focusing on up-and-coming artists, the festival has a penchant for picking about-to-break names, from Deer Tick to Trombone Shorty, Edward Sharpe to Brett Dennen, the Avett Brothers to Toubab Krewe, sprinkled among diverse music legends such as Robbie Krieger (Doors), Thomas Mapfumo, Bernie Worrell (P-Funk, Talking Heads) and Eric Burdon (Animals).

JTMF is produced by a family of friends and funsters convinced that music is the soul of life, and that art enriches and saves lives. The festival is constructed around one Music Bowl, flanked by two alternating stages. “It’s the combination of the setting, the music, and the people that leads to epiphanic moments,” explains English. By design “we’ve created a space that enables people to spend more time together with the ability not to miss any of the music.” Kidsville is action packed, and people rate JTMF as one of the few festivals that truly caters to the entire family. There is no nosebleed section, white tents or yellow-jacketed security details. Instead, there’s instant community with nonstop interaction, as people congregate under billowing shade cloth, moving from stage to stage while catching delectable, musical moments. This intimate affair is splashed with “conversation stopping” golden sunsets over distant rugged mountains and all-night desert walkabouts.

The desert is freedom, music is power, and community is crucial.

Outliers, Vol. I: Iceland – Live Audio/Visual Show with Deru, Shigeto, Sweatson Klank & Loscil July 10 at Lincoln Hall in Chicago

Posted in Events with tags , , , , , , on June 25, 2012 by worldromper

Celebrating the release of travel documentary Outliers Vol. 1: Iceland, this unique audio/visual event at Lincoln Hall features multimedia performances by several cutting-edge electronic music producers, including Deru with Scenic, Shigeto, Sweatson Klank and Loscil.

With dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions and a countryside carved out by glaciers, Iceland is a mountainous island of desolate beauty, ancient Viking lore and raw nature: unpolluted and inspiring.

In October 2011 with support from a successful Kickstarter campaign, Chicago film collective Scenic traveled to the remote Icelandic countryside alongside photographers Tim Navis + Kim Holtermand and music composer Deru. With a goal to create a series of improvised, collaborative short films, the group documented their experiences with the stark landscape, cultural traditions and Icelanders encountered along the way.

The resulting full-length documentary – entitled Outliers, Vol. I: Iceland – will be released in June 2012, along with a companion soundtrack compilation featuring thirteen contemporary classical composers and electronic music producers.

To celebrate the release, Scenic will join Deru onstage one evening only for a live, multimedia A/V performance inspired by the journey. Soundtrack contributors Shigeto (Ghostly International), Loscil (Kranky), and Sweatson Klank (Alpha Pup) will perform full sets.

The first 200 ticket holders who arrive are invited to an exclusive live screening of the film and Q&A session with the artists in advance of the show.
Presale tickets to the event cost $20 and are available here: http://www.lincolnhallchicago.com/Shows/07-10-2012+Outliers+Vol+I+Iceland

Mochipet drops a new album CHICXULUB next Tuesday August 16 on STS9’s 1320 Records, a melody-driven romp through a dinosaur dreamworld whose fun energy will be welcomed on dance floors all over – and good thing, because Mochipet sets off on a tour throughout the US in September, beginning with the Burn.

XLR8R has posted the first single off the album for free download, “Yoshi’s Dinosaur Egg Hunt,” calling it “an energetic slice of epic beat work that matches videogame-style arpeggiators (check the title) along with an over-powering breakbeat and a healthy dose of low-end rumble.”

[Video] Bassnectar Live at Red Rocks

Posted in Album News & Reviews, Events, Videos with tags , , on July 29, 2011 by worldromper

Festival king Bassnectar has a new album dropping next week August 2 called Divergent Spectrum, a balls-out, banger-filled album heat, frenzy and the big live energy that the artist is known for.

DJs all over the country count on Bassnectar’s heady, frothy, bass-fueled tracks to sling fire like sonic rain down upon their dance floors, and party people/beat freaks flock to his live shows in search of the sublime transcendence that the dance floor provides.

Capturing the wild-eyed vibe of a Bassnectar live show in one of the most beautiful venues on earth, this video from Red Rocks just may convince you to take another look and another listen of the #2 selling electronic artist today.

Divergent Spectrum is out August 2 on Amorphous Music.

Avant-garde theatrical performance troupe Lucent Dossier Experience performs at the renovated Palace Theatre in downtown LA on July 28.

Many of you may know Lucent from their amazing performances & interaction at festivals like Coachella and Lightning in a Bottle; their antics and shenanigans are often the highlight of the weekend for many.

New Dubstep Weekly: HEAVY Launches Thursday, June 23 @ Echoplex

Posted in Events, Music News with tags , , , , , on June 11, 2011 by worldromper

It’s hard to believe that with the undeniable upsurge in popularity that dubstep has experience in the past few years that there is no weekly dubstep night in Los Angeles.

That’s all about to change with the launch of HEAVY, an all-dubstep night on the east side at the Echoplex which will take place every Thursday. This new event is 18+, the cover is $10 and with the big capacity of the Echoplex, should be a rightful banger.

Resident DJs will be local legend 6Blocc, as well as Daddy Kev and DJ Nobody of Low End Theory fame. Special guests will perform every week, and word on the street is that some pretty big names are lined up to play the first several weeks of events.

Find more information on the HEAVY Facebook event page, and follow HEAVY on Twitter for all the late-breaking updates about this new weekly event.

Lightning in a Bottle 2011 Time Slots by Day

Posted in Events, Festivals with tags on May 24, 2011 by worldromper

LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE IS UPON US!

Festivals always like to print their schedule by stage, however I attend festivals a day at a time. So here is a handy-dandy print-up of the Lightning in a Bottle 2011 schedule BY DAY.

Please note these time slots go backwards, starting with the headliner late in the night and working their way backwards in the day.

I usually print out a couple of these to refer to in the latter part of the festival when everyone has lost their official programs and asking everyone they know about the lineup!
